This hold is for beginners, especially kids.

You can not die or get stuck, so have fun exploring DROD Learning Zone (DLZ).

Thanks to Doom for testing.

The voice scared me and I'm 17

Would the colorblind be able to finish the hold though? ;)
Okay, they can, you confined the doors to a single color. *grumble*

And why does this sound like the purgatory? :P

I almost had a heart attack as soon as I saw the topic and description, thinking that you had beat me to a tutorial.

Alas, mine is much more complex, so as soon as I played it, I breathed a very large sigh of relief. Still, you did a great job of this, Larry.

Amusing, though it'd be a terrible tutorial, since for every piece of information it tells you about the game, there's a more important piece it doesn't (esp. for brains, queens and wraithwings).

Erm, what about me? Looks like you beat me to the punch too. (Even though I've not played this yet, I'm making assumptions going by the title)

Can I just say, as a recent convert to this game, that I wish that this had been around when I started playing. It is well constructed and visually pleasing as well as being informative in the basics of the game.

Guess I may as well play... I myself was thinking of constructing one as well once the TCB relative movements came out.

EDIT:

Aah! Mastered, but the sound vibrations caused by that voice nearly made my nose bleed. :-O

Maybe it's just as well then that my DROD sound is acting up!! I couldn't hear the voice that is being talked about here. On the other hand my curiosity has been tweaked.

'Roach Queens run away from you.'
'But what else do they do? Why are they called queens?'
'Roach Queens run away from you.'
'Oh, ok. Why's the floor here all dropped yellow doors?'
'Roach Queens run away from you.'

--later--

'Ooh, a Roach Queen! I'll chase her down and kill her!'

-turn 30-
'Hey, what did she just do?'

-turn 35-
'Aaaaah! Run away! Run away! Why didn't the learning zone guy tell me about that?'

Folks, I actually asked my lovely 9 year old daughter to do the voice acting. Can you believe she was too shy? I'll try again. Believe you me, I'd rather listen to her voice acting too. If she'll do it, I'll update the hold and I'd hope it won't even affect any high scores if we're lucky.

Making a tutorial? So am I. Mine is going to have a tutorial, novice level, intermediate level, and expert level. Mine might take a while though.

Keep posting,

Yeah, mine's a bit more complex than that. It's going uber-ly slow at the moment, but I expect it to be impressive when it's done, though.

Yeah, it's well-made (ok, not a huge surprise for a Larry Murk hold), but it's just not a good tutorial. It's more of a relaxing, let's-have-some-fun kind of hold. I'd advise it to beginners who already know how elements work but are stressed out by other holds, not to true newbies.

I dunno. The whole thing has this whole 'How Denfry Would Run Clearing School' thing to it.

It's useless as a tutorial for the most part, though, yeah.

I wouldn't really say "useless". It's a really nice little hold and introduces a few of the elements. Clearly not comprehensive though, yes.

I dunno. I think if all it teaches about brains is 'brains can be stabbed', it is missing some pretty important elements.

Also, re: Voice Acting-

It's not Odd Jobs. So help me god, it is not Odd Jobs. It has that...it's a very Game Tutorial voice.

As far as I can tell this isn't DROD learning zone. It's DROD playing zone. You don't really get to learn any techniques which might be useful outside DROD learning zone. Also a kid playing the hold would have to have someone telling it what to do. Nobody actually says that you are supposed to kill all the monsters in order to proceed.

There were a few nice little moments and I managed to completely miss the secret(s?), so that must've been well hidden (that or it was in the bottom row in some room and I missed it because DROD windowed on my Mac has the bottom row obscured and I don't seem to be able to get both a full view of the playing area and alt-tab functionality, so I picked the latter.).

But it's just not any help as a tutorial sort of thing. About all I got out of it (as a very new player indeed) was what the various monsters looked like. You don't learn anything about monster behaviour that's not available in the help files and/or the monster descriptions on this website and indeed quite a lot less. You don't get any sense of why things are a threat (since you can't die). Also, the order seems a bit weird to me. Orbs are extremely basic and should have been on level one, for example.

Still looking for a helpful tutorial. Smitemastery 101 sounds like it would be ideal, but alas....
