Damn you, Schik! I managed to stay away from DROD for such a long time now! I built a career and everything! Then I just wanted to have a quick look how the next big thing was coming along, and you lured me back in!

Great job on the bar game, though.

I'm aware that the interactive version is just a bit of a gimmick, but if you wanted to, you could make it feel much more responsive without that much extra work, by letting the server return not only the current state of the board, but also all the ten possible states after each possible move. That way, the client side could always be one step ahead and execute moves immediately.

Of course, that would be about 50kB traffic for each move, but you could cut that down to not much more than the original 5 by, for example, only sending the whole board information for the wait move, and for all the other moves just send the difference.

Absolutely! Probing the covered room wall by wall and seeing your guesses proved true is a reward in itself :)

I just had all the roaches freeze in place after forming the click number. Is that supposed to happen?

Thanks to a little help from my friends I got to enjoy the bar rewards:) If only the original solution were interactive maybe I wouldn't need all the help.

Oh, and another thing that would make it more playable, is the delete key: The way the game is set up, it would be trivial to implement the undo function, but that's not even what I'm talking about — it's just that it should be captured, so it doesn't trigger browser-history-back.

That's no biggie, of course, because it's probably not meant to really be played anyway; it's just another thing that pushes it a bit deeper into that uncanny valley between the non-interactive version and the real game.

EDIT:

Unfortunately, crossing 100000 has now resulted in a sharp decrease in how funny the messages were compared to last time - only about 10.0 percent as funny.

I can confirm this - the sword turns to kill roaches as normal, but Beethro's body keeps facing NW.

In fact, they don't turn at all. Not even as they scatter.
Note also that both problems--the roaches and Beethro--deal with rotation.

This is still happening for me when I use I.E.. It does work for me when I use Firefox. I downloaded and installed Sun's Java but it made no difference.

And now Beethro doesn't kill a single roach. Everything just freezes for me at the point where the first roach should be killed.
(It does work for me under Firefox.)
