Excellent job on this hub hold. Being able to rate a room right after you play it is great.

My general thoughts: You architects must have hated the world when you made these rooms. Pretty insane!

And my bad, though I viewed all the rooms, I only wanted to vote on two. I wasn't paying attention and for some reason thought the others wouldn't be scored. So, all of you other people got tens. If a moderator wants to remove my vote that is perfectly fine with me!

In case anyone is wondering, all the entries are solvable.

I will note, however, that the staircase in Coriolis incorrectly goes straight back to Coriolis, so it's impossible to get back to the Hub after solving this room. This shouldn't be counted against the entry itself though.

I'm getting terribly upset about the lack of proper checkpoints in some of these entries. I mean, ok, most of them make a token effort to recognize that yeah, there should be checkpoints in a room somewhere, probably between distinguishable sections, but it doesn't seem like they actually thought, while playtesting, "yeah, it would be handy to have a checkpoint here, here, or here if I screwed up".

Man, I hate having to be the bad guy for this sort of thing.

It's been a while since this has happened, but we have someone who voted their own entry a 10 and *every other* entry a 1. It's been kinda-sorta-policy in the past to call out said person in public and let them apologize and let them re-vote. Or if they refuse I can just remove their votes and not let them re-vote.

So.... Keiya. C'mon. This is beyond being a bad sport. What happens next is up to you, I guess.

So, is there usually some sort of time limit for a response before you remove the offending vote?

This happens so infrequently that no, we don't have time limits set or anything. It will definitely be removed before the voting is finished if there's no response.

Voting one's own entry a 10 is traditionally somewhere between expected and required (I've done that here). Most of us in these parts are mature enough to give the remaining entries fair votes - mine fall pretty evenly between 3 and 9 inclusive for this contest.

Speaking of which, some more votes would be nice if folks can slog through the rather large number of rather hard entries! :)

I think maybe in future architecture contests we could require victory demos. At least then, upon giving up, we can see how the puzzle was supposed to go, and those of us who don't eat Doom holds for breakfast can have a somewhat accurate vote for hard entries.

And yes, were I a betting type I would wager at least one of these entries is Doom's.

Edit: And by "future architecture contests" I don't mean to say I'd reject help with several entries of this contest.

Given a number of comments made both in the thread and chat, I'm uploading my demos for each of the 15 entries.

For most of the rooms, I've chosen demos that I felt were closest to the intended solutions: there are a few entries that have some unintended ways of completing them. There is at least one room where I can't be sure my solution is intended, but it was the only one I could find.

I'm packaging them in a ZIP file rather than a grouped .demo file so that you can pick and choose what solutions you see, and to add an extra step so that you're not *that* tempted to look at them unless you really really want to.

I should probably note that simply watching a solution may still not give you a clear insight as to how the room works or enforces that solution, but given the time limiting factor of the voting and the number of people having difficulties, this is probably the best compromise for now.

Alright, I've voted. This is a really interesting set of entries, representing a very wide range of architectural styles, difficulties, and approaches to this contest.

As such, I've also voted using a wide range of scores, because I think, for better or for worse, that some entries did a better job than other entries at embodying what the point of this contest was, which was to make a confined room that made good use of space.

May the best entry win! :)

I have some detailed notes, including my ratings, my comments, and my guesses at who built each of these rooms. I will be posting those notes in a text file when the poll closes, as they're fairly lengthy and I don't feel like additionally formatting them with secret tags, boldface, and such.

Soo... I did something dumb. The only other places I've done forum contests, the norm was tactical voting - voting everyone else minimum, and yourself maximum. So I did that here too... and that's not the way things are done here, apparently, looking at the numbers. Sorry.

If this causes problems (IE, I end up winning because of it) the second-place person can decide who 'actually' won. Does that sound like a fair fix?

The point of the contests here is to give the best thing possible to the community, not to win a prize.

The semi-official policy has been to have Schik remove your vote and let you vote again, provided you judge the other entrants fairly and give them a rating based on that. But, of course, I trust Schik with the final decision.

When the expectation is that everyone does it that way, *not* doing it that way causes problems, just like when the expectation is that you don't, doing that does.

Now that I know the social norm here, it's not a problem. It was a culture issue, not me *trying* to be a jerk. So, yeah, sorry.

I bet it's not really the norm elsewhere and it's just that the administrators there didn't care enough to watch for it. Whereas here the community is full of number crunchers who'd cry foul even if Schik missed it.

I think the biggest problem is that there isn't enough votes for that to really be demonstrative of which room was the best. If you remove 12 of the votes by not actually voting, only 2 or 3 votes are going to decide the winner.

But you do still vote ten for yourself.

// Aside // Has anyone noticed how close and how high the votes are? We got some very high quality rooms in this contest.

I haven't finished all of them as of the vote time, so I noted my progress in the hidden comments. Many of these were very impressive and I regret having been unable to contribute, but we have more than enough entries to play already.

I really liked this contest, however, in some of the entries I've seen some useless tiles.
My perception on the contest was that every tile has to be efficient and contribute to the room.
As such, I have found quite some unneeded space in serveral entries.
The voting, however, seemed to be slightly more based on how the puzzle was rather than it being cramped.

I wish I knew why I was voted 2 twice on, so I know what was you found wrong about the entry, because i thought it lived up the name of cramped very well.

Also, to Chaco: I expected my entry to be obvious because it was rather as clunky as my entry in a previous hold contest. I probably shouldn't have told you that I entered the contest. Oh well ^^;

I came last place - which I expected :)

However, I'm pleasantly surprised by how high my end rating is given 3 factors:
1. I've never designed a room before.
2. I got the wrong end of the stick regarding the aim of the room. I thought it was more to use as much space as possible without leaving empty floor tiles.
3. I didn't use any of the new stuff.
