Here it is, the poll for the Reflectorations contest. Just in case anyone hasn't actually done this before, here are some ground rules:

1) Please download the eight contest entries and spend some time playing with them. Once you feel that you have sufficiently evaluated all of them, you should rank each hold on a scale of 1 (least favorite) to 10 (most favorite).

2) It is considered good form to at least try to play each hold before rating the lot. You can only vote once...

3) Contest entrants are required to rate their own hold a 10.

4) Obviously capricious ratings will be removed -- if you rate one hold a 10 and every other hold a 1, your votes will probably not be counted. (And yes, we have ways of telling.)

5) In general, I think it's OK to comment on contest entries, but any in-depth analysis or discussion of solutions should be concealed behind unhidetime tags so as not to bias other voters. Unless someone is asking for help...this is really just a guideline.

Voting criteria:

1) The goal of this contest was to have each architect create a hold with puzzle rooms in different orientations. Horizontal, vertical or diagonal reflections are all legal, as is rotation. Each entry must contain at least two and at most twelve puzzle rooms.

2) Voters should consider how solutions differ in rooms of different orientation.

3) Ultimately, the rating comes down to how much you like each hold, but do please try to take the contest theme into account.

OK! Enjoy!

[EDIT: Also, I'm reattaching the .zip file of all entries to the top.]

Josh

You think you could have mentioned this one first? I just finished downloading each one individually before I saw this one. :)

Mostly it's a good way of getting a total count of voters.

It's also a minor inside Forum joke, if you search for posts by prringles.

It annoyed me at first that the entries were not together on my list of holds in-game. That's why I named mine 'Reflectorations - Penwielder' in the hope that everyone would do something similar and they would all be together when sorted alphabetically; the intended title for the entry was the title of the level itself. Then I realized that I could just sort the list by something that didn't apply to unofficial holds (rating, for instance) and the holds I had imported most recently (these eight, in this case) would land at the top, having no other place to go.

I haven't voted yet. I've only finished half of them, counting my own, and have done part/most of all the others. I'm just posting here in case anyone else has the same problem as I mentioned above.

Try filtering by "non-CaravelNet". That ends up pretty much just being contest entries, beta holds from Architecture, and your own works in progress.

A while back I made a suggestion to have a naming convention set up by architecture contest organizers. (My RC stands for "Reflectorations Contest".) Maybe something could be written into the "Running Your Own Fishbowl" post, and if the contest organizer forgets to give a naming convention in their announcement they could be reminded.

If our votes are influenced by the different solutions per room orientation, I'd have to rate almost all of them bad as I can't figure out 80% of these rooms...
I wish the authors could have put in hints or explained how something worked (Like Penwielder's Snakes)

I don't know that you have to be able to solve a room in order to rate it. (It certainly helps, though.)

Sometimes it's enough to understand how things changed.

Demos would be a fine idea. I've played completely through three of them, some of four others. I haven't tried the last one yet, but I'll get to it. (And no, I'm not saying which one is the 'last' one. It's just the last one that I've tried.)

Enjoying them all quite a bit, though.

I was going to post that I must be the dumbest player out there, as I have yet to figure out how to solve any of the rooms but one. I agree that you can evaluate a room without solving it but it has been hard to even understand how some solutions were changed by the reflecting.

So I vote for posting demos and will get mine up ASAP...Now someone just remind me how to do that... :blush

OK I think I got it figured out...if not let me know.

The way I did it: went through my hold and deleted all but one victory demo for each room from the F6 Demo page. Then hit "Export All", also on the F6 Demo page. Voila.

In case anyone else was wondering, those scrolls aren't hints; they just explain the factors I used so you can focus more on the logic of the puzzles themselves and less on what you have to do in the first place.

Demo pack attached, as requested.

EDIT (Response to post immediately below):
I have no problem with that. You're likely to be the best enforcer of the idea behind the contest, as well. If anyone disagrees, though, please speak up.

Point of order:

Do people think that it's ethical for the contest moderator/organizer to vote in the contest? I have at this point neither voted nor viewed the existing votes, and I certainly will have no compunctions about sharing my opinion...but don't want to actually cast votes if anyone thinks that would be inappropriate.

I don't think it's inappropriate at all. Architects who participated are allowed to vote, so why not the contest organizer?
