There is a rule and here it is: all adjective or noun compounds beginning with "self", except selfish and selfless, require a hyphen.
I was speaking specifically of compounds containing the word "self". For other compounds there are other rules, but, as is usually the case in English, there are loads of exceptions ("self" being one of them.) So if in doubt, consult a dictionary.

Hmm...
Yes, but a dictionary of English usage—not just a plain dictionary.
(I once read that it's best to consult a book which contains the word "usage" in its title.)

1:00 AM: Finished work, got home late because apparently set strike needs an afterparty.

2:00 AM: Went to sleep.

5:00 AM: Woke up feeling oddly great.

5:30 AM: COFFEE

6:45 AM: Left for school.

From 7:10 AM to 2:10 PM I had school. Over the course of the day I:

Borrowed ICO from a friend.

Argued the symbolic value in Toni Morrison's Beloved of Paul D's transition from cattle rape and masterbation under Garner to being raped in Alfred, Georgia to starting a relationship with Sethe in regards to how he regains what he claims it is to be a man (autonomy and respect) in comparison to his original connection with Sethe: sex. Though, like Sethe, he refuses to evoke his "rememories", his true failing is that of wanting this autonomy over anything else. His rape at the hands of Beloved deeply disturbs him, and he is only able to escape it through his devotion to Sethe. This culminates when Stamp shows him the article, and he leaves Sethe, perhaps the first decision he has ever made.

Went through the "trying to get through to children convinced by their culture that they must fail" routine as a student aide. The inspirational ending is still nowhere to be found.

Put on a puppet show in the style of Indo.nesian Shadow Puppetry, it was based on one section of the great Hindu epic Ramayana.

Argued over salt at lunch. This was, oddly enough, directly connected to the puppet show.

Filled out forms to direct Alfred Sutro's play The Open Door, his classic satire of British society and the limits it places on basic human behavior. Eventually I decided to classify it as a tragedy although it fits the description of a Victorian Era comedy.

Struggled with vectors. The three hour nap I used as an excuse for sleep begins to show its inadequacy.

Argued over The Governor's Dilemma. I argued for cannibalism which, while unthinkable under normal circumstances, is not wrong on an absolutist level because absolutism does not exist. Morality is purely a construct that is an inevitable by-product of community. This community, in which cannibalism results in the only new food that can be produced until help comes, would result in cannibalism being a social truth purely due to its necessity.

Today, I've been struggling, and struggling to get my first RPG hold to work, without any result. I realised that I needed to do something constructive! So I dragged my little sister out to build snow cave, it's become a bit of a tradition to do one every year.

We've been out for almost two hours, and now I'm sitting here in my computer chair, wet and cold, looking out at the result :)

Today was a theatre day.

First I helped semi-dismantle the stage (don't worry: it's made of 2x1 metre modules, and meant to be taken apart), install speakers underneath, and run cables to the amplifier next to the lighting console. We tested the setup, then rebuilt the stage and rehearsed the complicated final scene of the play where basically the whole cast is on stage arguing loudly.

And finally: Our first full runthrough of Resurrection Blues! It went pretty well on the whole, although of course the scene changes took forever, people still dried up occasionally and skipped a few speeches, and the sound and lighting have a few hiccups left. But we do have another few days to iron things out -- opening night's on Friday 3rd.

Now I'm back home, rerecording the sound effects disc to fix a few panning and volume problems and generally make the operator's life a little easier.

A good day, I'd say: I did spend it underground in an 18th century coal cellar, but I'm told I didn't exactly miss a lot of excitement weather-wise.

Phew! I never knew RPG scripting could be so addictive and yet so fickle.

But today, I finally finished my entries for the March 2009 contest. I didn't do much else, though, I have to admit.

So, what did you do today?

It's mostly been an organizing/sorting/cleaning kind of 24 hours. I finally opened up all the mail which has been accumulating on my hutch. This was a really good thing, because, apparently, unless you actually deposit the cheques, you really haven't been paid. Caught up with my invoicing. Paid bills. Was surprised to find out I've qualified/won at least three free trips, if I just... It's amazing how much junk mail we get. You'd think with email and autodialers these companies would start saving on postage.

I spoke with my mother; her recovery is going very well. Cleaned dog and cat fur off various pieces of furniture; wow, I could stuff pillows with this stuff. Bought a foam filled Pelican case, so I could at last have a custom hard case for my computer systems and peripherals. Very pleased about that. But man, are those foamy bits static-y! I'm sure there are still some stuck to me. And I finally heard from my husband who's been incommunicado for 4 days in the Congo. He's now at Heathrow airport, waiting for his flight home. The 24 day trip is over at last. (I'm sure he's happier about it than I am.) Of course, I'm leaving tomorrow for a week long job in Vegas, but at least we'll catch a glimpse of each other tonight. It's funny; we've been skyping as often as possible -- once he was able to get great signal in a field in Nepal -- but from Heathrow Airport? The crappiest signal so far on the trip. It couldn't handle video at all and even the voice call kept dropping out.

So now I'm off to the bank to deposit those aforementioned cheques, and then off to buy a new suitcase; Dave needed every one of ours for his camera equipment, and, unfortunately, his luggage never made the connection from Kinshasa to Jo-Burg. *sigh*

Sleep at first, of dreams my own... Wake! I stir my tired soul.
Journey forward, travel motion. Office beckons... routine notion.
As I type each word in line, the clock ticks down to my own time.
Nightfall happens, carriage returns. Homeward again, weekend beckons...

Syllables are what you see...
Each line its own, like a, b, c
But in time with the routine bell,
It's 1, 2, 1, 2 til the end.

Today, I took part in the USTEF Massachusetts State Taekwondo Championships in Springfield, MA! It was a very long day, had to wait around a few hours for my division to begin. I got a gold medal in Forms, and a silver medal in Board Breaking.
Overall, it was a very good experience. I got to meet new people and learn new things. I posted a video on YouTube, for anyone who wants to see.

At school i finished off most of my assignments by 2:50 and got the last 30 minutes of the day off.

I tweaked up a bit of my RPG Hold: Confessions of a Broken Hearted Stalwart. Adding decorations, removing useless keys and making it non-impossible.

I talked to a few of my friends on MSN.

I played a few holes of golf down in the reserve near my house on my homemade course. I almost hit my neighbours house. :blush

I wrote a post on the Caravel DROD forums about what i did today while watching The Breakfast Club on my TV :D

So, what did you do today?

6:00: My Alarm which i had not set back one hour for day light savings rang at 6:00 thinking it was 7:00. Thinking it was seven i got up, and i have been tired for the rest of the day.
7:00: Logged onto Caravel DROD forum and checked new posts, fixed up a few errors on my new hold, Confessions of a Broken Hearted Stalwart.
8:00: Powered off my computer and got ready for school.
9:00: School officially started and we started our first lesson of the day, Word Study.
10:00: Finished Word Study, made my way down to the science room.
11:00: Another easy lesson of science, with nothing but discussion. Left the science room and got my recess and hat. Hung around with friends at recess.
12:00: Worked on my assignment "A Convicts Tale" which is due on Thursday, almost finished.
13:00: Ate lunch at friends table with friends. Went out to play.
14:00: Again was working on my assignment "Convicts Tale".
15:00: Packed up my stuff and met my "escort" outside the classroom.
16:00: Came home and checked the Caravel DROD Forums.

Around 11:30 I woke up, trying to remember that great action dream I just had, with no luck.
After that, I somehow got up, checked what is playing on other radio station then turned it off. Quite probably I scratched my head somewhere between. Next I got up, wore pants, and sat in front of piano to try playing Lost Painting. Once I realized that playing it in current state leads to more and more epic fails, I went to a room next to the bathroom to throw two pairs of dirty socks into a basket where dirty underwear resides. I was too lazy to take another pair so I squeaked to the kitchen, to retrieve my mighty laptop from underneath the tv. After noticing that it is still working, I opened Thunderbird and Firefox. In Thunderbird I checked mail and RSS (Flaky Pastry and Megatokyo had new strips, and T. Biskup finally put some news on his site), in FF I used Morning Coffee to get my daily dose of webcomic strips (turned out that YAFGC, Misfile, Plush and Blood, userfriendly and Cyanide and Happiness had new strips, albeit Questionable Content will probably be updated later).
I then continued work on Front-end for Actionscript's OGG Library, when my Mom nagged me about breakfast. I decided the time has come to brush my teeth and wear the socks. I had scrambled eggs with tomato, bacon and onion (mmm, onion). I also made myself a 1/4 liter cup of coffee and 1/2 liter cup of tea.
Right now, aside from writing this post, I am fighting with OGG Library's seek function which apparently does not work, though it might just be that it hates me. *takes a sip of tea*

And I am listening to Orange Range... I WAS listening to Orange Range but changed to Armcannon. :)

So, what did you do today?

Today I got up early because I had an appoitment with the dentist at 09:30. Not something I was particularly looking forward to, because it involved a root canal treatment. Luckily everything went very smoothly. Oher than the procedure being a bit lengthier and less comfortable than usual, it wasn't actually painfull at all, which is always a bit of a relief. Still have a second treatment scheduled in two weeks, but at the moment that's still far away.

When I got home I got behind the computer. Checked for new posts on the forum and was surprised to find a new Illumination. Always a good sign to see Illumination updates, even though I had already heard most news in this particular one.
Next I read some of my regular webcomics that had updated, which were only Digger, Sinfest and Subnormality—tuesday are always a bit low on updates. Checked my emails, which notified me once again about the Illumination. And that about concluded my standard first things to do when I turn on the computer.

The rest of the day I spent doing some more and some less coherent things, including but not limited to reading some magazines, having lunch, looking for articles on image resampling on the web and having supper early.

Which brings me to the other interesting thing I did today, because shortly after supper I went to see a movie with my parents. We saw 'The Reader', which was a rather good movie and an enjoyable way tho spend the evening.

Now I'm back home posting this and asking to the next person:
So, what did you do today?

icon What Chaco Did on April 30th, 2009 (+1)
* Got up

* Ate a light breakfast (some cereal and a granola bar)

* Made sure I had everything I needed for school (including golf bag put in the car trunk for later, and cell phone charged for later use. I keep my cell phone in the charger next to the computer, even though my parents say it only needs to be charged once a week, but it's convenient for me.)

*Checked the forum a bit

* Went through the school day (I have three AP tests in Statistics, Calculus and Chemistry coming up, so this is really crunch time for me - going to be doing a lot of studying this next week)

* Called my father; he took me and my clubs to the course for golf practice

* Played a round of golf at our home course and shot 54 through 9 holes - this is about typical of the scores I've been having as of late, so that was good

* Went home and did calculus and chemistry homework (just some take-home multiple choice sections from past exams)

* Ate supper

* Messed around on the computer (probably a bit longer than I'm supposed to around this time of year; well, I've set aside the weekend for the no-nonsense stuff)

* Read some webcomics, continued converting the Imperishable Night soundtrack to a looping form so I can play it in iTunes (definitely something I shouldn't be doing this time of year!)

* Wrote this post

(It's ~9:00 PM now, so I won't get much else done today.)

I had something of an epic day. Relatively epic, for sure, compared to some that I've had previously.

Early in the morning, I woke up early to finish planning for class and grading some last minute things. I then went to teach said class. The first class went fine, until the very end, when a student notified me that the semester ended on the 21st, instead of the 28th as I had previously thought, and been informed, as I was told that it was an 18 week course, and we were supposed to go for the full 18 weeks.

Turns out the student was wrong. Between classes, I discovered that the semester actually ends on the 20th. Which makes it a 16 week course. This is week 14. Obviously, I have to improvise, and tell people that plans are a-changing, as I had scheduled the finals for the last two weeks.

Most of the students are in both classes. So after gathering my thoughts, and attempting to destressify, I made a plan to bump up the exams to next week, and the week after. Disaster averted, but it really would have been nice to know when the semester was supposed to end. It seems like that would be important information, no?

Anyway, I gave the test to one senior (grades for seniors were due today, fun!), and then came home for a spell, before heading out to dodgeball. We won 2/3 in the first game we played, and then I was practicing when another team came on, one member short. I asked if I could play along, and they agreed. Epicness commenced shortly thereafter. In the third of three games, it was down to just me against 4 members of the other team. (Play starts with 6 on a side.) One by one, I took them out--two in the legs, one off the shoulder (which was close, because his teammate caught it, but it had hit the wall) and then it was one-on-one. I kept throwing low, and forcing him to throw at me, to tire him out, and then I got him out on the legs. 4v1 and the 1 won, and the 1 was me.

My team then got dominated in our second match. Ah well.

After dodgeball, we headed out to the game bar, and I got to witness the epic 3OT basketball game between Chicago and Boston. Epic indeed.

Now it is time for some epic sleeping.

What if our complaint about Twitter is not complaining about the concept, but rather the execution? Perhaps we don't think Twitter is a very good Twitter.

What if our complaint about Twitter is not complaining about the concept, but rather the execution? Perhaps we don't think Twitter is a very good Twitter.
My biggest gripe with Twitter would be how looking at someone's Twitter feed on their site gives you a fraction of the whole picture - I remember there once was a way to view someone's Twitter feed on the twitter site with the posts their posts were responding to interspersed, but obviously that must've been buried under a plummeting fail whale...

Being that one-sided a Twitter feed is like having to listen to someone's cell phone conversation on the bus - just plain annoying.

Many twitters have that whole in response to blaaaah part at the bottom, though. If they don't punch the guy right in the settings until he does.

Well, a nice tread idea.

I usually wake up and get up early, becouse my dad always do a lot of rumours for his work.
Then going around the house, greeting my mum...and the dog.
Getting breakfast, with a cup of milk and biscuits....hmm...biscuits!!
I take a shower, and, if it is an ordinary day, making the bag for go to school.
If it isn't, i usually go to the computer to play DROD and checking the forum, or exit with friends in the afternoon/evening to play sports or just going around the city.

Well I think I'll cover what I did this last week mostly because it makes today sound more exciting.

Where I am right now: On a farm

What I am getting right now: Swine flu. ... But not really because the whole thing is mostly a joke. (Or so I'm told by the pig farmers I'm living with.) More like a wicked cough because the barn is the dustiest thing ever invented.

Why I'm here: I don't know... Money? Character? Finding enough money of the next semester in the shortest amount of time.

Why is this form of writing enjoyed so much? Twitter maybe. (That would explain why it sucks)

Anyway, I am living on a friend of the family's farm being a farm hand for eighty hours a week. The pay is low but the hours make up for it. Basic layout for a day:
6:30-7:00 Wake up maybe breakfast(If up early enough)
7:30 Changed into coveralls (Sweaty stuff) and go out to the pig barn
7:45 Feed pigs - This is the most straight forward part:
Take cart around to the sows with piglets (Scoop is about half the size of an ice cream pail
Cart past boars just enough food to shut them up
Walk into the weaned pen and dish out food from feeder
Then to a different barn with the growing pigs - They just require me to trigger the feeder and make sure it doesn't stop until all of the buckets they eat out of are full.(Super dusty barn)
All of these need me to pull out any dead that I see. (The worst was one of the fuller grown pigs that weighed close to three hundred pounds. You chain that one and drag it out)
8:15 Do unsupervised job or something otherwise told
Yesterday we marked and separated pigs for the slaughter house.
The small jobs that I do by myself usually pertain to cleaning of some kind. For example one job that I have done was picking rocks out in the field. (Helps the seeder when they go around) I'm to clean the growing barn tomorrow with a hose. Or something else that I have done was grind out the seeder to remove the rust on the inside. This is so we can put a new coat of paint on it.
1:00 Lunch (He doesn't pay you to eat so it is a good idea to get back on the field) AKA dinner
Likely you are not finished the job you started in the morning, so you go back to that.
5:00 Feed pigs again (Maybe also feed the Dry Sows (Sows with no young). They are fed every other day)
6:00 Super Sometimes you cook and clean. (You are eating twice the amount you were before you got to the farm)
7:30 More work (If applicable)
They also have cows and three horses. Actually one of the cows is giving some trouble right now. It lost it's twins and now we are trying to get a calf sucking on it.

You work every day of the week, except less on Sundays. (Pigs still have to eat though)

Getting by with a little DROD. That new SMS has my midnight brain in a pickle. Know what to do, but not how to do it.

Explains my absence, and time constraints, but it is lots of fun out here. Picture Alberta nothing in sight, small deadwood forest doubling as a septic pond and grain silos surrounded by rusting heavy equipment. And a few tin barns. (One nice classic one too)
