It seems that we're undergoing a real period of change in these forums, and I just want to remind all of you guys not to take things too seriously. Dax Stewart, I'm looking at you.
I mean we've had a bureaucracy installed, actual arguments, a lot of newbies (Like DROD(Who I'm calling DORD from now on to reduce confusion.))
We've passed the 4000 user benchmark too. And I really hope we can just sit back and enjoy the change. Banjooies's gone. Don't be so sad about it. I liked him just as much as you guys did. Maurog, the smiley's, the random down moddings are an effect of this growing too. Heck, the next DROD's gonna be an RPG! Don't be so sad.

I couldn't agree more. The forum is no longer the small, tight community it was when I joined (which was before the addition of the rank point system). As b0rsuk said in Maurog's leaving thread, "quality of a forum tends to be inversely proportional to amount of people posting on it," and with what I've seen, I'd have to agree.

So, guys, any bright ideas?

A couple of things I want to say:
1) It's Dex Stewart
2) I don't believe I'm taking this too seriously. I don't mind the Bureaucracy. I may even later be a part of it. It doesn't bother me. What does bother me however is the loss of Banjooie.
3) The... degradation(maybe this isn't the best word for it) on this forums isn't due to the number of users. Imagine us being 4000 Oneiromancers. It's due to the number of people who... just don't get it. Best example in Anson. There's many things about this community which he doesn't understand, which is fully explicable, considering that he is 8.

And I'm sorry, but no, I am not able to come up with a solution to that problem.

Yes, yes of course. BRILLIANT! I can see now how Anson has been bringing this forum to it's knees. It hasn't been people being hypersensitive or anything like that, and it is definitely not people playing the blame game. I'll get the pitch forks, you bring the burning torches ok?

To be quite honest, I don't think the Bureaucracy will change things much, with the possible exception of the Dept of Grand Constructions. People will continue on mostly as they always have, but with certain people taking on more responsibilities.

Well... Actually Banjooie has already proven that people can be so upset by this change that they choose to leave the forum (or perhaps doing something equally drastic).

There might very well be changes.

I would love DROD as a MMORPG where you chose between 2 factions (Empire, Rebels), level up your character, interact with other players, raid Empire cities, duel with the final boss Beethro Budkin (if you're an Empire char) or with the 1st Slayer (if you're a Rebel char). It would be FREAKING AWESOME.

But... wouldn't that slightly destroy the point of DROD, with all its charming individuality? Would it not take away the separation between DROD and other games?

If something like that were to be made, it should be a separate game from the DROD we know - not something our beloved DROD grows into.

Anson, having come back from something of an absence, seems to have acquired a clue. I heartily approve. I agree that the user named "DROD" is the best example of this now.

And while change occurs, I firmly do not believe that the right reaction is to shrug and say, "Eh, what can you do?" I've said before and I'll say again, I positively refuse to coddle people who come here and post but fail to contribute in any constructive way to the forum, and my refusal will persist from "be nice, he's only 8" through to "so what, change happens".

Don't get me wrong, while I did say that such behaviour is explicable, I did not say we should accept it. Everyone should be treated the same way; if they don't like it, then fine with me, being part of this community isn't a right, it's a priviledge, which everyone else earns.

If you'd notice, Tahnan, the degradation isn't because of the newbies. It's always because of the major members: Maurog and Banjooie are prime examples of this. I doubt it's really because of the rising membership, though that may have contributed to it. Neither Anson nor DORD (I said that's what I'd call him) were the focus of anything major. The bureaucracy, which was started by the webmaster, was a source of arguments. Maurog was a source of arguments. Banj leaving was a source of arguements. Not Anson nor DORD nor any of the other newbies had anything to do with any of these incidents.

Even though I partly participated in this conversation, I firmly believe it should be stopped at once and this thread should be deleted. With few exceptions, which wouldn't behave otherwise no matter what, we all know what to do to make this forum a better place. This thread is just, as you call it, a source of arguments, arguments which, in my opinion, aren't helping. At all.

And BTW: This forum is still probably *the* friendliest, warmest, most intelligent and in every way best I know. Even though it seems to be going down, I don't think that it will come at a point where it will be disturbing or undesirable to read.

I am never a "source or arguments". I am an early warning system indicating that arguments are afoot and bringing them to attention of the public. The public then decides whether to root them out, or water them until they grow to dramatic proportions. You people better not try to imply it's somehow my fault the second option is so popular. Don't shoot the messenger.

That said, I'm afraid I have no idea how can we make the forum better. Unless you count solutions in the style of kicking 7 certain people out of the forum without any explanation, then locking the ensuing drama thread, and watching the quality improve. The admins would never do that.

Just for the record, if I had known about that while it was going on, I would've neutralized innocent posts of Maurog's that had been modded down afterwards as soon as I had seen them (I don't mod posts often, so I have many mod points to spare. Also, following my dad's example of never giving negative feedback on eBay, I never have and don't ever plan to give negative mods). But let's not talk about that topic anymore. It already happened once and we don't need to keep bringing it up. Like I said, we need to get back to DROD!

I think the greatest problem with this forum is that it's only interesting when something major is happening, whether it be someone boasting about a bot hack in DROD, the release of a new game/Official hold or an exciting and engaging contest.

Which is why I like the Bureaucracy idea.

I think the forum is plenty interesting even when a new hold is not being released or a new style is not actively being made. Feature Requests and new General posts are always around, and there's plenty to do in the non-DROD forums.

While the number of people on at the same time is undoubtably increased during a major event, I don't think it's completely vital to the forum that this happen periodically.
