Looking forward to some memorable and cheeky voice acting and some incredible music. At least that's what I'm hoping for.:)

Yes! Jon Sonnenberg has composed somewhere around 90 minutes of new music for TSS. I absolutely love 80%+ of it and really like the rest. With the JtRH/KDD, TCB and GatEB music soundtracks also included, plus some new tracks from Emmett for special use in TSS, there's going to be a whopping 5-6 hours of good music in there.

I'll remember to include Syntax in those we recruit for voice acting so we are sure cover the cheeky part. I loved those takes :)

That's extremely exciting. Thank you for sharing that and I'm really looking forward to it, can hardly wait!

I'm also looking forward to the music.

For better or for worse, no. However, it's simple to script up such a door.

mrimer wrote: The three new room styles are called Garden, Basalt (the lava one) and Sandstone (with the floor spikes). These are actually directly built off Jutt's room styles of the same names. [...]

I don't think there will be a problem having two styles of the same name. By default, the pre-installed 5.0 room styles of these names will be used. If you apply a mod of Jutt's original room styles with these names, then they should override the 5.0 versions.
Wow, I never expected that.

I have to admit, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it's great that these awesome styles are finally getting official recognition, and presumably will be getting unique music. (Now we just need Mosaic Frost... though after how far I've got with building Satoko's Sanctum, I'm used to Mosaic Frost going with AE music now.) And the touched-up Garden looks awesome.

But... I looked back at the screenshot of Sandstone. The wall texture there is very nice, and I'm sure it will look lovely when we see complete rooms. But considered as a version of Sandstone, it's horrible. It's brown instead of red, and it's bricks instead of that lovely grainy texture. So now, if I've understood you correctly, I won't be able to use the original Sandstone in my levels, unless I install a mod, which will mean (1) it will override the TSS Sandstone on all levels, and (2) other players will see it as TSS Sandstone. This deeply saddens me.

Sorry you think it's horrible as sandstone.

Is Sandstone published on CaravelNet?

Mike, can't we overcome this clash by renaming Basalt/Garden/Sandstone to something different? (even if it is Basalt2 etc)

Thus is the official hold uses Basalt2 it stays as Basalt2 regardless of whether someone installs Basalt, and vice versa for a hold that uses Basalt.

Insofar as the original Sandstone's been used as the primary style of two of my holds, yeah, CaravelNet should be automatically shipping it out to whoever installs them. Or at least that's my understanding.

I second the renaming idea, but not Basalt2 etc., there are other names that fit. Possibly something like this?

Basalt --> Caldera
Sandstone --> Pyramid
Garden --> Courtyard

An unrelated question (and one that may be difficult to answer):

How likely is it that TSS will break rooms that were built with previous versions of DROD? Is any existing logic being changed? (like the bomb explosion order thing back in TCB)

Not too long ago we ran a TSS spider against all of the high score demos, and fixed any logic that we inadvertently had broken. I don't *think* we'll be breaking any old rooms.

no no no, no worms here

I support the idea of changing names of the official styles so that the old ones work too.

Had no idea there was a thread showcasing TSS elements. After what I've seen here, I'm extremely excited for TSS to come out. Hopefully it'll be as hard as the previous DRoD's. GatEB was entertaining and I loved the split story and secrets, especially the bit leading up to the spider well, but it wasn't too hard.

Anyways, looking forward to this game :)

I'm tentatively okay with a renaming at this point. These names seem fine. Don't we have an older style named Pyramid by saqqara though, or am I misremembering?

The rename I currently like best for the 5.0 room styles are:

Basalt --> Vulcan
Garden --> Courtyard
Sandstone --> Desert

Since no-one else seems to be offering their opinion on the style names, I'll share mine. I really don't like "Vulcan", which is an odd one out (the others are types of place) and too similar to the unrelated "Volcano" style. "Caldera" is much better, as well as being an awesome word :P

I have to agree there, Vulcan sounds off-place (for me).

I'd change Sandstone into Brick, too.

Well, I think Vulcan fits - it is evocative of a very hot place. To be fair, though, Caldera is pretty sweet too.

It's good to get some feedback now. When there isn't any, we just go with what we personally think is best. Then when someone decides to complain about it after release, it's too late by that point to change anything.

My feedback: I don't think we should call the Sandstone style Brick. I'm assuming that naming choice is just because the walls are made up of bricks in the screenshot, but Brick isn't a good way to describe all the other features of this style.

Seems like the vocal minority like Caldera, though. I agree we don't want confusion with the Volcano style. To foment discussion, I'll say we're now tentatively planning on:

Basalt --> Caldera
Garden --> Courtyard
Sandstone --> Desert

I note that all these are near the beginning of the alphabet and will appear close to the top of the style list. That's fine -- they're all awesome.

Just wanted to mention a small 5.0 feature:

NPCs will have support for other (pre-existing) movement heuristics, and also for A* pathmapping modes.
