This is a game based on the following logic puzzle:
Lucy and Pete have identical antiques which are lost by the airline they took to get home. The manager will pay them back, but he assumes they'll try to inflate the price, so he decides to have them each (separately) write down the value of their item (an integer from 2 to 100 dollars). If they write the same number, he'll assume they're telling the truth and pay them each that. If they're different, he'll give them both the lower number, but also pay the person who wrote it a bonus of $2, and subtract $2 from the other one. What should Lucy write?
For the sake of this game, you are all Lucy (or Pete), and your goal is to get as much as possible from the boss. Your opponents are all the other players, but you only get one number, so it's the same considerations as if you were competing against one opponent, really.
So how do you compete? You consider the logic dilemma carefully, and pick a number from 2 to 100. You make a single post in this thread which only contains the following:
[unhidetime=09/06/2007 12:00 PM]Your number[/unhidetime]
You can make only one post. Edited posts will not count, but you are allowed to delete your post and make a new one. Posts that were submitted after September 5 will not count either, so please submit your entries before the deadline (the message below will open when it's too late).
Please don't submit any more entries!
After September 6, we calculate the winners, and the scoring will be as follows:
Every person's number will be compared to every other person's number and they get points according to the traveler's dilemma rules. The people with the most points win. Note that people who pick the same number will get the same score by definition.
This is it. It's not a contest, just a game, so have fun calculating the optimal number! Anticipating any questions about the "
real"
value of the antiques, just assume it was 300. Life isn't fair.
This post is just for the entries. For discussion, use the
Traveler's Dilemma Game Discussion thread.
