Well, the time has come to vote on those literary works. When voting, try to rank the contestants on:

entertainment value. Was it a good story, did it have wit, was it enjoyable?

Writing Talent. Did the contestant do a good job of capturing the feel of goblin speak? Was it written in a concise manner?

For those of you who actually entered the competition, you can still vote, but there are stricter guidelines.

You must give yourself 10 and must not give all the other contestants 1. When voting on a fellow entrant, use the above voting criteria, but also on technical difficulty. Were you impressed by the scope and challenges surmounted by the contestant?(note that this should not have a too large an impact on their rating)

Ok, here are all the entires, all in one nice .rtf document.

Note that I inserted the title when one was not given, and underlined any existing title. Please don't attribute any marks to the title, seeing as I didn't ask for it.

I laughed when I saw this. Honestly, writing for this contest took a conscious effort not to slip into JarJar/Yoda speak. Obviously, I wasn't the only one to have this experience...

Just voted with a few hours to spare! I though this was a very good idea for a Contest and I enjoyed reading and re-reading the pieces. I particularly approve of the anonimity in this Contest and I wonder if it might be possible to arrange that for all Contests? ( I know it is harder with Holds because one's name is there automatically.)

As I wasn't a contestant I though it might be acceptable to give a few thoughts on each piece. I've Secreted them, partly because of the length and partly so that they don't have to be read. I know that not all writers want crits.

I was contestant 4, for those of you who can't seem to replace characters with other characters.

I agree with Elfstone's commentary on each of the entries, and I especially would like to congratulation goldenlion for his fantastic monologue. I voted that one very high.

A short and simple contest that worked very well. Congratulations also to NiroZ for suggesting this to Erik!

I probably should say that I have re-uploaded the files so that now the person's name is next to their entry.

Oh, and thanks :D

I was contestent #3 did anyone solve the secret code and solve where '#303 GoBlin Spi' was going to hide?

Elfstone wrote:
Contestant 3 -another good idea, but I’m afraid I disliked the insertion of forum names. I think there were better ways of developing the ‘stolen codes’ theme. I also found the random inserted upper-case letters made the piece harder to read. (I have to say I smiled when I read “Syntax zits too tricky” - open to several interpretations - sorry Syntax!)

Sorry that some didn't like the use of forum names I took a risk thinking it would make it more interesting for those who were contestents, :fun

Is it all uppercase letters, or just the ones in the middle of words?

Anyway, thanks to all who voted in this contest and gave us writers some feedback. I thought the overall quality of goblinspeak was pretty good. I think this was reflected in the voting (everyone got above 5, which is quite good!)

Among the other contestants, I enjoyed everyone's offerings. I especially enjoyed the Goblin News Network and Beef Row's description of goblins knowing how to go over trapdoors, (tickling them? brilliant!) I also found myself wishing that I'd read the Da Vinci Code so I could understand a little more of Tahnan's. Anyway, solid writing from everybody!

I had a lot of fun "translating" Shakespearean English into Goblinspeak and thought I managed to strike a good balance between keeping it like a monologue and still expressing it so that your average Eighther goblin would understand the sentiments involved. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it too!

Wow! Last time I looked just a few hours ago, I was still fourth, so I was pretty sure that was where I was going to be. Yay for my first top three finish! :8bounce

EDIT: I see now I still WAS fourth. Very impressive goldenlion.. Two excellent entries!

As I said earlier, the two highest votes I gave other than my own were for goldenlion's two entries (a 10 for the story, a 9 for the monologue), so I certainly can't complain that (s)he beat me. Twice. Kudos, goldenlion, kudos.

There's an excerpt from The Da Vinci Code on Dan Brown's site. I loathed the book; I can't especially recommend it; but if you want to see why I felt such joy in imagining a barely-literate version (which is only slightly less coherent than Brown's own work), you can look there. Personally, I blame techant for referring to the need to "break the goblin code".

You just inspired me to go back and look at all the Beethro's First Job entries. Man, I had a lot of fun writing my entry, but there were quite a few appearances by some familiar faces and some not-so-familiar. It had strong entries from agaricus5, techant, Banjooie, krammer, the illustrious author quoted in this post, and a lot of other talent! That contest was a lot of fun to participate in and judge.

As for writing other stuff for DROD.net -- despite the whole married/working lifestyle, which cuts down on time available, DROD seems to inspire me to find time to write, so I always like trying my hand! Just start up a Grand Audition for writers instead of voice actors, and I'll probably be there! :)
