Dear DRODders,

I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but just in case you don't, I'm Wesley (agaricus5), former Archiver and regular, and I disappeared from the DROD community nearly half a year ago in February, leaving (or rather dropping ) quite a number of high level responsibilities in doing so. Because of this, I'd just like to apologise to you all for that, and also for any inconveniences that it caused.

However, I have an explanation. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.

Ahem.
Click here to view the secret text

Of course, I'm only joking. There were no goblins or mud babies involved, although I think I saw a rank point bouncing around somewhere. What really happened was actually a bit more complicated and much less exciting. You see, it was a combination of several things put together that eventually stopped me DRODding, which could be summarised thus:

I disappeared in February shortly before my interview for a university application because I needed to prepare properly for it, so I couldn't really play DROD (or anything else for that matter), for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, shortly after, I was struck by, err... a kind of personal family problem which sort of made me lose all interest in DROD and forget about it for a while. After a while, I began to consider returning to DROD but the revision and exam season soon started, and DROD was sidelined again since I didn't really have the time or energy for it (I was also told, in a roundabout way, not to either). Once the exams were over, preparations for our holiday to Malaysia in the summer holidays began (we were going not long after we finished school), and so I thought that returning would not be worth it, since I would just disappear again very shortly. So, three weeks passed, and I returned just in time to pick up my A-Level results and discover that I got into Cambridge after all (yay!). The rest of August was then spent partially relaxing and partially getting things ready for Cambridge, usually triggered by receiving mail from Cambridge or UCAS (our University admissions service/organisation), and I have to admit, DROD didn't cross my thoughts at all for that period due to the excitement. As September began, however, I began to
think of DROD again, and soon really missed it and the Forum (I even mused about it for an hour one day). However, I am afflicted by a condition where I refuse (irrationally) to do things I am not sure about, and what I was unsure about in this case was returning. Having left so suddenly, I was mainly worried about what I had missed, and also the things I had neglected to do when I first vanished. The major things I was concerned about were:

1) The massive volume of posts that I would have missed.
2) The possibility that TCB was already released or in testing.
3) The fact that I have missed at least six contests.
4) The possibility of losing my post as an Archiver (which I probably
have :().
5) The amount of archiving to do, assuming I do still retain my post.
6) The fact that Erik and the DROD team might be angry or upset for me disappearing like that.
7) The number of new holds I have missed, and my lack of time to
play them.
8) The possibility that I could have to shelve Golbar's Caves (my
hold in progress) due to lack of construction and interest from testers.
9) The possibility of Rabscuttle or someone else causing my demo score and ranking to become absolutely awful.
10) The possibility of the forum not giving me a friendly reception.

*11) The possibility of losing all my rank points.

(* Not in top 10 list of worries; author cannot guarantee accuracy of statement. Quoting will result in litigation.)

Eventually, though, I finally plucked up the courage to return, convincing myself that at least 6, 8 and 10 couldn't be true, and so sat down to write this message. It took nearly two hours by hand, and correcting it will probably take two more (my tablet PC's handwriting recognition is good, but my handwriting is poor. Also, all my lines have new line characters after them, which is a bit annoying).

So, to conclude, the delays were caused by an unlucky set of coincidences, and a personality that allows me to take advantage of them. However, it’s all over now (mostly), so I expect that this shouldn’t happen again for a long time (except when the summer exams approach, and even then, I can be reminded by Mark (krammer) if we meet).

So, I will post this message, and then leave for now; I just can't face the bar, the maze of new posts, or the fact that my subscription has run out.

[Oh, actually...

…Hmm...

I won a contest and have been in 16, so I could claim a subscription if Erik will let me].

I'll check back shortly, and see what happens (or not, as the case may be).

Well, perhaps. :)

And finally, the immortal question that needs to be answered: "How many forum members does it take to...

...hide muffins calling under water in distress?" [No, wait. That's not it. Also, it should be noted that the muffins are distressed, not the water. Or actually, is it the opposite?]
...harass monkeys cracking ugly, wet Indian durians? " [That's definitely wrong, although I suspect the answer is 42, or thereabouts.]
...hop madly, cementing uncoiled weapons into Dugan?" [Grr.. wrong again! I guess Dugan does deserve it, though.]
...help me catch up what I missed?" [Ah yes, perfect!]

Welcome back, Archiver! As far as I know, your position hasn't really been usurped, just kind of left there for a while, gathering dust and the occaisional Wraithwing.

Hello, agaricus. I'm absolutely positive you don't remember me. That's okay. And I forgive you for the mistakes you didn't make.

1) The massive volume of posts that I would have missed.

True. However, only a small amount of really high, must-see posts were made during your absence, and they weren't that important anyway.

2) The possibility that TCB was already released or in testing.

Not even close - as you can see, it's only 85.5 percent done.

3) The fact that I have missed at least six contests.

This is true. This is not much of a problem because it gave Henri more mugs.

4) The possibility of losing my post as an Archiver (which I probably
have :().

You, sir, are a much better Archiver than I am. It's like you're the 35th Archivist and I'm the 216th.

5) The amount of archiving to do, assuming I do still retain my post.

This is true; however Patrick has cushioned the impact somewhat by compiling a few useful tidbits into the website.

6) The fact that Erik and the DROD team might be angry or upset for me disappearing like that.

I have a hard time believing that Erik could be mad at you. Cambridge, man! Cambridge!

7) The number of new holds I have missed, and my lack of time to
play them.

Sir, it is widely believed that holds are being released faster than delvers can solve them. Or, at least, pretty close to being that fast. Very few people have solved all holds and they have a lot more time on their hands than you do.

8) The possibility that I could have to shelve Golbar's Caves (my
hold in progress) due to lack of construction and interest from testers.

It's perfectly fine to take a break from a project that doesn't want to progress. I have done this as well.

9) The possibility of Rabscuttle or someone else causing my demo score and ranking to become absolutely awful.

58th place. That's only 57 people in the world who are spending more time optimising than you.

10) The possibility of the forum not giving me a friendly reception.

Sorry, I'm too nice for that and I've read a lot of your posts. ;)

So, in summary Wesley, I understand. You've done nothing wrong, and we welcome a guy who's done an astounding amount for the DROD community.

For further reading, read the September Illumination - Erik still wants you around too.

There's a tip I can give, if you always think like this: go ask for professional help, asap! There are courses at your school that can help you suppress these kind of irrational thoughts, and doctors who can help you out of it.

And one other thing: if you're unsure what *I* (or Erik) will think of you if you do X, please *ask*. You should not think for me, I can do that, thank you.

Oh, and :hi back!

Speaking of Illuminations, of course...

Also: I really, really highly recommend that anyone in academics read Academic AWOL (it's a column from Inside Higher Ed; not very long); but aside from that, I think it's very much applicable here. (The upshot: unless you're in the military, returning from a disappearing act is easier than you think.)

Come home, Wesley. All is forgiven.

Thanks for the responses; I can't reply individually to all of them, due to time constraints, but I thank you for them nonetheless. Oh, and because I am apologetic by nature, I shall apologise for having to apologise for not having done anything wrong. :)

Umm... yeah, but I don't think I have a really serious problem; I just downgraded DROD's importance in my life, and got a little scared about returning after so long. I don't think I need to see a specialist, thanks.

And one other thing: if you're unsure what *I* (or Erik) will think of you if you do X, please *ask*. You should not think for me, I can do that, thank you.
Hmm... I guess there's been a little misunderstanding here, although this is the kind of thing I was referring to: I wouldn't know what would happen if I did "X"; this kind of response could be the result anyway, which I'd rather avoid if I can help it. Of course, it's not really important anymore, since it doesn't really apply.

Tahnan wrote:

I was concerned it was a bit long, but then again, the story is in a secret tag, so it looks shorter than it could have been.

I think this is possibly longer.

Also, if anyone remembers the Unlimited Undo thread, this one is also quite a long one too.

Indeed I have, and taking a look...

I am still #4 (properly) in the "Average Points" column! :w00t

That is incredibly surprising, although I am upset that my #1 total is now 49, which was my main concern in the point system (I had more than that, I remember). Oh, well. I'd better get back to optimising. Is unlimited undo a feature in the main game yet?

Nope, but it will be in TCB if you've conquered the room and the hold. (thus keeping you from using UU on a post-master room the first time around)

Anyway, Welcome back. The only people who would be under fire because then just dissapeared (or even announced dissapearences) would be Erik and mrimer. See the The Revenge of Watch the Bar Strikes Back 2: Electric Boogaloo for proof.

I remember playing Bavato's Dungeon back in AE times and banging my head numerous times at it. There are very few holds that are both consistently excellent and epic-sized, but Bavato's tops them all, in my opinion.

Speaking as someone who doesn't contribute anywhere near as much as you have, but loves DROD and its community -- welcome back.

Agaricus, my name will mean nothing to you as I discovered DROD after you had left, but I have heard about you and played some of Bavato's Dungeon, before I lost all my Hold information.

I have also read your essay on the Eighth in preparation for a writing contest a wee while back. So all in all I feel as though I know you and would like to say that I am pleased that I will have the chance to 'chat' with you here in the forums. Welcome back!

Elfstone. :)
