Everyone coming to the forum this weekend is lucky. As part of your good fortune, you can now take a first look at Flash DROD, now live on the CaravelGames site. Here's a direct link. There's a new "Play Now" button on the sidebar that will take you there.

Here, you can play the games, and everyone who worked on the game should be listed here in the credits under each game. We'll have more to say about it in the Illumination, which should be coming out later today. But let me say, this game release is an awesome event.

These titles will be coming out shortly on some major Flash game portals. In the event you notice anything that needs fixing, please post about it here so we can shake out any last issues before the game floods the world. Thanks, and enjoy, everyone!

Edit: Skell is the man of the hour here. He made all this possible, and kudos go to him. He'll probably pop in here to take a bow and share some additional thoughts. Everyone, don't forget to congratulate skell on his great work!

Well folks I will try to make it short.

This game is a labour of love.
Almost exactly a year in development.
Forty thousand lines of code.
Not to mention the invaluable involvement of testers and architects.

Making my own DROD-like game was one of my game-developer's dream. I have tried it many times and always failed before, but not this time. So, as I used to say way back on these very forums. Keep going! :)

Incidentally, for those of you wondering: Yes, the Newgrounds version will have Newgrounds medals tied to the achievements, and we're working to get some Kongregate medals too.

But don't worry! There's no reason not to start playing right here and now, because Flash save files can usually be manually transferred between domains, and skell tells me this should be the case with Flash DROD. I will put together some instructions on this once the games are released to portals.

We can't guarantee how quickly the medals will be available in Kong though, it all depends on how popular the game will be on Kong and if the moderators will feel the game is worth it.

NG medals, on the other hand, are ready. Each game gives a total of 500 points! The game will be released there in succession though, with probably a month (or more, or less) between each game.

Not to big of a deal, but one thing I would appreciate is if you would have the option to reduce the holding time before you start moving when holding a key down.

It was decided not to reduce the time, but we didn't discuss making a slider. I like the idea. We should make little or no wait the default, for the same reason repeat rate starts at maximum.

I'm really enjoying this! The achievements are absolutely perfect. They're everything I could want. Breaking this into episodes of four levels each is great. I'm sure you'll get a following on Kongregate or Newgrounds with minimal effort.

The "Queenburger" achievement (Level 2, room 2E) is a little vague - I assumed initially it meant keep the queen out of ANY corner, but actually it means keep the queen out of the Northeast-most corner. Changing the text to read "... the northeast corner." would make this more clear, and save a lot of unnecessary frustration.

Unless you are meant to keep the queen away from all corners, and I just got the achievement more easily than intended.

What needs to be done for us to see it on Kongregate or Newgrounds? I want to see what reception it is going to get.

EDIT: Also what is our capability for people playing it on this site? Is it likely to come down after a period of time? I don't really know anything about bandwidth and flash so...

Minor errors: in Eleventh Level 1N 1W and 1N 2W Beethro's speech is messed up(judging by voice acting, he seems to be talking about tar mother, but text speech is "sp11n2w1" or something like that - definetily not what it should be).



Meanwhile, I've completed all three episodes and I've enjoyed them. Looking forward to seeing this game on Kongregate(and newgrounds)!

KDD1 is levels 1 - 4, KDD2 is levels 5 - 8, and KDD3 is levels 9 - 12. If you conquer an episode, you will need to go to the next episode for more levels.

Additional episodes with more levels will be released eventually.

Played through the first level and part of the second. Way too easy!!! Seriously though, you all did an excellent job here. The achievements feel like a natural part of the game instead of a late addition to DROD game-play.

I do have one minor quibble In the help screen you state that holding shift-wait advances the timer 30 moves. But, you never actually say what the wait key is. It's implied when you list the movement keys, but it would probably be a good idea to explicitly state what the wait key is.

Out of curiosity, is it possible that this will go beyond the initial four installments? Now that the engine is complete, how difficult is it to make new levels? Yeah, yeah, I know. As soon as you give us Flash DROD we start asking for more.

I'm pretty sure that he's pointing out that 25/4 has remainder one and is asking if we're going to miss out one level to make 24/4=6 level packs.

This is a good question. I know it was discussed but don't know what the answer was or if it's been decided.

Oh. My translation skills are not up to par. :P

Level 13 in its current form would definitely be skipped, making for a divisible 24 levels. However, someone made a lovely Level 13 Redux that makes the level much more fun to play. If skell and the architect decide not to replace the old Level 13 with it, then the levels-per-episode idea works. Otherwise... I have no idea.

I reckon that since the SWF file itself isn't hosted on caravelgames.com it shouldn't be too hard on the server.

You mean three installments? There will be KDDL4-6 for sure, one special release and afterwads.... We shall see. There are ideas, about that you can be sure.
