combine 2 doors in one.
appears checkered with two colors.

(combine it with vittro's suggestion of separate mud/tar doors, and black doors become just a double-door of mud and tar doors)

(theoretically, we might even go with "2 orbs for one door" thing, just need to sorta make yellow, and, uh, perhaps orangish for the other checks)

I know, you're thinking, "where's the puzzle? we can already just put two doors in a row"... but:
a) it takes less space
b) it prevents sneaksie delvers from finding they only need to drop one door and use a mimic or decoy to get to the orb beyond the door pair

mostly "a", really. makes it easier to stuff a single unit of it somewhere critical.

okay, not much of an idea. nevermind.

To the negative modder of my above post:
What? He said "nevermind", implying clearly that he regretted posting it, so I assumed he'd be happy to know he could undo it.

I must agree with Jatopian here, on the grounds of I'm not sure why you leave a topic up that by the end you are quite clearly saying it is a bad idea?

I mean, unless you're fishing for people to tell you you're wrong and you have an awesome idea. But I don't think that's what's going on here.

because I didn't think it was a bad idea. I thought it was a neutral/so-so idea (I believe my words were "not much of an idea"). "nevermind" was hyperbole.

It did have a certain mathematical appeal to me: changing the black doors from a "special case" to an instance of a general and more powerful solution.

I would be someone unaverse to suggesting someone was distasteful of an idea that they referred to as 'not much' and for people to 'nevermind'.

I am also crazy?

not crazy. just not understanding my odd sense of self-deprecatory humor (which is fine, a lot of people don't. it is an "odd" sense of humor, after all. based a lot on British humor (I'm not British, but grew up on their TV), which a lot of people seem to think is "not very funny," even without my modifications. But, I'm unconcerned... as the authors said of MST3k when asked "aren't you worried that no one will get your jokes?", "no. the right people will get it.")

Personally, I think it's a great Idea, though it might ruin the look of certain "view from minimap" hold art, causing black doors to look sorta different in TCB. One problem, how would it look in the minimap? Maybe they should double the minimap's resolution before implementing this idea. Then they could just checker it.

I'm not all that fond of the idea of new doors; it just seems to add to the learning curve. Unless, of course, it were added in that clicking on a door told you the conditions for removing it.

However, my main concern about this idea is that it might not be all that feasible once TCB is released. Green doors stay dropped if new monsters appear after they are dropped, but black doors will reappear if more tar stuff appears, (Who the heck knows about red doors?) What would happen with a green/black door?

That could be a neat idea even with the doors we have.

Click on a door and a message pops up that says what you have to do to open it.

ooh, OR

Click on a door and what you need to do to open it is highlighted

Yellow: highlight orbs in the right colours
Green: killable monsters highlighted (but not spiders?)
Red: trapdoors highlighted (reveal under tar ones)
Black: tarstuff highlighted
Blue: unconquered rooms on the map? Unconquered discovered rooms on the map?
Master: ??

All the "new" doors are two "old" doors on top of each other, so that takes care of learning the checkered doors. A green/black door, if you exit and re-enter after clearing the monsters, is a black door, like it was before you exited. Or if you mean clearing all tar, then somehow (I don't think it's possible) more tar spawns, then the door would re-appear as pure black.

My only concern is that this would cause confusion with the master doors, which already look like a combination of yellow and black doors.

No they don't... They are striped and have block separation, and the black stripes are just gray. Besides, the yellow/black doors would be yellow/tar/mud doors. ;)

If space is really an issue, I like the idea of making rooms bigger more than I like creating a bunch of special purpose room elements that IMAO will be relatively rarely used (at most a few dozen squares per room, and at worst perhaps only one or two holds).
b) it prevents sneaksie delvers from finding they only need to drop one door and use a mimic or decoy to get to the orb beyond the door pair
Sure, this caveat applies to any architect making rooms with placeable doubles. But there are easy workarounds for this (sideways force-arrow, for example) and hopefully architects using doubles in their rooms are thinking carefully about unintended solutions.

(IMHO unintended solutions are not inherently bad, unless they're trivial solutions. And that's what playtesting and beta boards are for.)
