We can run some more games of Snakes! ...to the Death. But I would need a little help from others to create an arena and organize lists of participants.

I think nearly everybody would like to see shorter games with quicker turns. Maybe the parameters are 1 minute turns, 2 hour (on average) games, and about 10 players per game. We could probably run 2-4 games on the weekends.

I guess I'll see what the interest level is, what ideas people have, and if anyone wants to volunteer to make arenas and organize participants.

Hey Erik,
Maybe you can create pool play. Have 10 pools of 10 players and then have those 10 winners play for the championship. This would all depend on the response.

Just a thought.

Or, as a variation, we could have the Tar team vs. the Mud team. Red snakes v. Blue. And the objective is to kill everybody on the other team.

I know this should probably go in the Snakes!...variation thread, but I think this one's a bit more prominent right now.

Either way, I'd enjoy playing more Snakes!...to the death!. Maybe a bit more than just 1 minute though...every 2 minutes seems like there'd be a bit more time to consider various possibilities of what others may do...because 2 is more than one...you know what I mean. Sometimes, finding the path can take a while.

But I do enjoy the game immensely. Not as immensely as DROD, but immensely.

I'd love to play a little Snakes to the Death...

But with a smaller arena, and quicker turns

My suggestion for faster games across all time zones:

Don't have fixed turn lengths. Instead keep updating the arena until someone has a real decision to make (i.e. where jumping != bumping) but have not yet entered a move for it.

Give them a day to respond, and after this bump the automatically.

Update until next decision point etc.

--

I suspect that this may be quicker than the original two-hour move system if the arena is large and snakes are sufficiently separate from each other.

It could be slower of course if someone leaves the game. You can give someone less time to move each time if they aren't inputting moves - so 24h -> 12h -> 6h etc

Erik, you're probably busy doing other things, but is there any way you can delegate out tasks so that all we have to do is say we're ready, you click "go", and we get to play? I feel like playing again.

I'd definitely be interested in participating, and could probably bring along a friend who was watching the first game and wanted to play subsequent ones.

Can't offer any organizational skills, though...sorry.

Ack. I was following this topic for a while and didn't see anyone volunteer to organize, so I just stopped reading it. I'll set e-mail notification on this baby now, so I can see who replies back.

We could start by having someone make a 10-snake arena that has an average duration of 2 hours for 1 minute turns. You have to edit a text file to make the arena and put in characters that represent different elements for the starting condition.

Attached is the arena file for the Snakes to the Death contest. Here's a key of what the different elements are:

^ - wall
# - crate (jumpable wall)
(space) - empty floor
s - snake head facing south
a - snake head facing west
d - snake head facing east
w - snake head facing north

So here's how you figure out the dimension of the new arena:

2 hours x 1 minute between turns = 120 turns
120 turns x 10 snakes = 1200 squares to cover
34 tiles = square root of 1200 (about)

You could make a 34x34 grid and it would give most snakes a 2 hour playtime. Some snakes will die earlier, leaving more squares for the other snakes to cover, prolonging the game. Some squares will be obstacles or unreachable, shortening the game. Maybe someone has a better formula for calculating the ideal size of an arena, but I think this one works okay.

So step 1 is get a good 10-person arena. The people who played the game will likely have some design ideas, and it will be interesting to see what is made.

Uh, when I downloaded your file it didn't seem to be formatted correctly, Erik...

Perhaps you could put the contents in [code] and [secret] tags so it more resembles a box and not a pile of spilled silverware? And then it'd be coherent and the walls would be solid, instead of crumbly. :?

Please, I would rather people post arenas here instead of e-mailing me. And then you guys got to figure out one that looks good amongst yourselves. Not to sound aloof or anything, but my involvement with this has to stay minimal.

Chaco, you just need to view the file in a fixed-width font. Opening it in notepad (on Windows) will accomplish that.

Here it is in-line:

I was opening it in TextEdit, the Mac equivalent, and it was messed up. Oh well.

Yeah, it looks much better in-line Erik. I've got a couple ideas for an arena, so maybe in a few days I might email you with something. :)

In Windows, I recommend using notepad and turning off word wrap. You start by making a rectangle of walls in the intended size, i.e. for 34x34 you have a rectangle like...
Click here to view the secret text

Actually, you can copy-and-paste the above into notepad. Then press the insert key. This makes it so that whenever you type a letter in notepad, it overwrites an existing one. It's easier to make changes to the squares this way.
Also, Erik, my first post mentionned i wanted to try making an arena.
Yeah, I saw that. Good luck! If you can finish an arena, post it here and get feedback for it.
