no joke, I really did have a dream about DROD. I dreamt I was going into a really expensive restruraunt that had really good steak. As I went in, I encountered a whirlagig. So, I whipped out my sword and tried to kill it:

A Whirlagig is an interesting being that I don't entirely know the properties of. This is because I only got to kill one. I don't think it can move at all, but it may be able to. It has a sword about the same size as Beethro's. When Beethro moves, the whirlagig spins one turn. The blue ones move clockwise, the red ones move counter-clockwise. When brained, their swords always point towards Beethro.

Yeah...I'm playing way to much DROD right now (sheesh...stupid dream).

Chalks, this is your first post today. Does this mean that you concieved of this waking up from a nap (since you posted at about 4:00 PM Eastern time)? Was it during night-time sleeping that you had this dream? Because it really changes everything.

On the other hand, last night you were up very late (at least after 11 PM). You know, they say to discount any dreams you have after Thanksgiving.

The idea reminds me of a script used in the Dodechahedral Hold, two South:

The characters in the room spin around infinitely unless stabbed. Can whirlawhateveryoucallits stab eachother? Or do they just switch directon or stop spinning?

But the idea of a sword-wielding monster that always faces you and is immobile interests me. It could be killed, or course, by Beethro facing North one square West and two squares South of the whirlagig, and then moving Northeast. This, or course, is assuming that the whirlagig faces Southwest. It would be interested to make a whirlagig an immobile slayer, but without the wisp. Then it could not be stabbed.

[standard procedure]
I'm sorry if I failed to provide an "It can't be done" rebuttal. Perhaps someone else would be able to help with this. Or maybe someone other than Someone Else. :)
[/standard procedure]

You can already do it with a scripted character, both ways. I'll make a small, one-room hold file to illustrate this - gimme a second.

EDIT:

Here ya go. The brained one doesn't work for some odd reason, but it should. Edit the level; it's Anyone Edit. I think the scripting *should* work, but doesn't.

oooh, very cool. I can think of lots of neat little tricks to do with this guy. the brained one might need some work though. Is there any way to make it so that in your script it will detect if there is a brain or not? I haven't tried out the editor hardly at all so I have no idea if I'm even asking the right question.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Unfortunately, the current scripting system can only wait for a monster at a square. Luckily, brains are immobile, but if a monster steps on the square at a future date it'll act brained again. Maybe after the first wait command is broken it'll never try it again...

It's possible, but really hard to program a brained whirligig, and a regular monster would probably be easier. Would these need to be killed to clean a room?

Yes I think they would need to be killed to clear a room. Although, if you didn't need to kill them, you could make a room that had brained whirlagigs in it, then make it so that the only way to clear the room is to have unbrained (is that a word?) ones in the room. Maybe have a big square with a whirlagig in the center and a roach mother on the edge (but on red floor, so that it couldn't spawn). Then, the whirlagig's sword would always be pointing away from the queen until you killed the brain...I think.

now I'm going to have to figure out how to script a brained one. hrm. I'll do that tomorrow. :D

I fixed the brained whirlag, you need to add a wait 1 turn or else the changes will never be seen, also some of your wait areas where wrong, here it is.

Oh, I see. I thought it did that automatically with the waiting, but I guess not. Yep, there ya go.

Uhm, yeah, red whirlagigs are just as easy to make as blue ones. Still, it's mighty tedious to make brained ones, so it might be handy to have these around.

Insane, I'm afraid that your brained whirlagig is faulty. :shock

The Wait 1 Turn(s) commmand is completely unneccasary. There is a better solution, and it works to the effect that Chalks had described. The fact that the room has a brain doesn't matter much, for brained whirlagigs and unbrained whirlagigs can work well together. I did not have them work together here.

However, making a brained whirlagig is rather complex for just a single monster. Plus, changing its location by a single square will cause all of the room areas to change in the scripting. It's easier to just take a previously made one and change the room areas by double-clicking each room area command. This took about 1 minute for me. You could also recode a whirlagig to make it unstabbable, like the Slayer.

Enjoy the hold. It is of one room.

I reallllly like this. Thank you to all you coding gurus who figured it out. Especially you Swivel!

Now I just need to find the time to make a hold! :D

edit: AH! I finally figured out how to kill the last eyeball in your room. very clever! I'm very impressed. have another mod point!

Cool! I'd never seen that before. Regardless...

Also: I tried googling that, and came up with Quest, a book that had a $90,000 prize if you figured out the puzzle. Took 14 years for anyone to solve it. Pretty nifty.
