Okay, so what's the point of the 3x3 maze of green rooms? It seems like when you're down to just one serpent and the goblin, you can goad the goblin just to the right and down, thereby bypassing the 3x3 maze entirely.

You'd have to ask Erik Hermansen (the original architect) about that one - I know I solved the room the way you're describing and I'm sure many other people have too.

A lot of older rooms have unintended solutions not initially noticed by architects or testers, especially when rooms seemed harder than they would now due to fewer players having really honed in their skills.

I'm stuck with the challenge here:

There are four serpents, the 2 right most serpents (1&2) can't get there,
so I need the 2 left serpents. Check.

The bottom left serpent (3) is no problem, but the big serpent (4) above it, is giving me a hard time.

When I bring the goblin in (I gues I need the goblin to at least shorten the serpent one square to get Beethro in),
I can't get the goblin to move past (5)
So the serpent dies and the challenge fails :weep

Any ideas where I go wrong?

Thanks in advance!!

This one is very tricky. You need to shorten the serpent right down to two squares, then move the goblin away, after which you have to keep the goblin moving so you don't lose the serpent. It helps to remember exactly how goblins work: they avoid any square next to your sword as top priority, then they choose the square closest to Beethro (preferring north and west to break ties).

So, when the goblin is at 5 in your image, with a two-square serpent above him, Beethro must step SE so that the goblin wants to move E (closer to Beethro) and his sword must not be in a southerly direction. Work from there.

So... what's next?
I've got the goblin to this point.

Obviously, if I was playing this straight like any normal person, I'd use the goblin to kill the snake.
But this sadistic challenge expects me to kill two of the snakes in that dead-end hole the goblin started from.
But that's impossible, isn't it.

Sure, the hints say to shorten the serpent down, but then getting the goblin out of the way can't be done. I've got nowhere to go with the serpent in the way and the goblin's too stupid to get out of the way by himself!

At this point, I've tried following hints to no avail and my patience has run out... I just need an outright solution! :weep
