And like I immediately replied, my name-calling isn't petty at all.

Besides, we could probably safely lock this thread now, the issue's resolved.

May I come in again?

There is another point about high scores; that they don't show who makes the biggest breakthroughs in a room. To take one room as an example – King Duggan's Dungeonm level 25, 1S2W – someone discovered that you can get to the door at 28,3 in a way that the architects did not plan for. This is brilliant, and surely the player who discovered it should be honoured.

Once the breakthrough has been made it is relatively easy for others to do it a bit better, cutting a move out here and there, or a little bit faster (I don't see why faster is better) and the original inspiration is lost.

In the big picture, I don't suppose it matters. But fewest moves, or fastest play is not necessarily best.

I've got to say I'm with Banjooie on this. It's not clear to me what would make someone think to ask Syntax about mxvladi's demos.

But probably more importantly, bodkin's post above mine raises a good point. Not an answerable one, mind you, but a good one. I don't think there's any way to recognize who had the insight into any given room (unless that insight gave them an unimprovable #1), and I'm not really even sure there ought to be. It's just something to keep in mind when thinking about high scores.

There are many sections in your demos which are too fluid to be entered by hand. I've seen similar playback when using room section solvers or playback macros hence my original post. Optimising time is never usually a stat that optimisers focus on so I'm not looking at overall times as such... but rather - moves in various sections are not natural (Puppet Master: 2nd level: 1S1E: 124 - 144 is a great example)
Perhaps it might simply be manually recorded keyboard macros? I myself have a button which quickly outputs QQWW (useful for clearing out masses of roaches after using a speed potion) and I don't think those sorts of things should be discouraged. Regardless of whether any external tools are being used or not, if the the time taken to solve a room is the only thing to get affected, then it isn't such a big deal, and people shouldn't be getting so worked up about it.

If someone comes up with the sequence for solving (say E,N,N,Q,W,S,S,SW,...) and enters it into a keyboard macro program, does anyone care how the sequence is actually inputted into the game?

P.S. My quantum computer from the year 3000 solves all possible DROD rooms simultaneously.

Everyone whom I've heard express an opinion about you has expressed a negative one, and the general consensus seems to be that you're 'that guy who's kind of weird about DROD', which is certainly right in line with your having posted this thread, and not particularly compatible with "approachable".

I'm going to go ahead and remove myself from Jatopian's blanket statement; I think Syntax is a pretty neat guy and while I don't really have any questions I'd specifically go to him for, I think he's just as approachable as, say, CuriousShyRabbit or Tim, whom I would also consider to be approachable.

I don't want to get involved in any big debate about highscoring methods, unlimited undo or macros, but I hope the forum's members can at least be excellent to each other.

I tend to agree with Chaco on this.

I don't approve of macroing, or of any kind of solver (other than orb solvers) but I don't really have a strong opinion either way.

My opinion about Syntax goes pretty much along what Chaco said, if anyone cares. Not being an avid optimizer, I can't say I really care about people using external tools t solve rooms.
Rather, as long as *they* are having fun it is perfectly fine to do whatever they are using, as long as this thing is not undermining other player's progress. ;)

Well, I disagree with this. I think Syntax is fun, friendly, and a great drod player and contributor. I think the initial tone of this thread was unfortunate.
