Site's up.

I've been juggling seven or eight different things at once and getting none of them done, so I've gone, screw that, let's get three plates going properly.

Architect's Toolkit #5

This is really different in style (and length) to the other toolkits, and more what I was thinking what it'd be like. It's a walkthrough of buiding a room, and I basically walk through all the decisions I make as I build a lynchpin-type room that turned out rather well.

Spin-Off Showcase

A place to put all those projects that come from DROD. If you have a project not there, I want to know about it.

Also, some changes to the Eighth Pinned Down article, so it's beter written.

Matt

Cool!

I do think, however, that the spin-off showcase belongs under "Fun Stuff", not under "Upcoming".

Is it bad that I can defeat the Toolkit hold without holding back on the tar? I just brute forced my way through it, not seeing how to get past the second stage using the intended solution.

Probably not - in hindsight, I probably could have done a bit better to force you to keep the snakes alive than just using roach mothers. However, I'd expect a good portion of the DROD players here on the forum to breeze through it - the article is intended for people about as skilled as I. Which is saying things about me that are rather embarrasing.

The intended solution for the middle section was to bring the snake into the tar and grow over the top of it.

I meant to put a note in about getting other people to playtest it, to reveal weakness, but I didn't in my excitement.

Rejoice and be glad! The forum is alive!

It's funny how the forum ties it all together, after two days I got bored of DROD, now I want to play again.

If you see messages like these, please post about them on "The Site" board. Schik will then see them and eventually get around to correcting them.

....or at least hide them under a rock so they don't bother you. ;)

I would hesitate a guess at CPU failure as the user accounts/HS etc are still there.

Here's a blurb I wrote about it from the Illumination post that will go out after things are more stable:

We don't know what exactly the problem was, but the old server would hang every so often and needed a reboot. And one day last month, the machine wouldn't reboot because files in the kernel were corrupted. So Schik and I were faced with setting up the server from scratch, and we decided that if we had to do all that work, it might as well be on a newer, faster machine that can cope with the load better.

I'm not in a hurry to blame all our problems on the old server. We may still have some of the same hang-inducing bugs in our code that will need to be fixed on the new server, but it's good to start again on some faster hardware.

So the new server is up with CaravelNet and forum restored to what they were the minute before the old server went down--no lost data. There's likely to be a few things that don't work right due to the new setup, and Schik and I would appreciate if you would report them on the "The Site" board.

Everybody that had CaravelNet before the downtime or purchased a membership during the downtime will be credited an extra two weeks. A number of people have placed orders during our downtime and haven't received their CaravelNet membership info. Don't worry--that is coming to you shortly. Sorry for the trouble!

I am hesitating to send that big newsletter to everyone right now because it might cause 50 or so people to swarm the site at once and then get confused and irritated by the bugs. The people that have shown up now to get confused and irritated by the bugs are at least the more committed types that will put up with a bit of a mess. If anyone feels they've been unfairly made a guinea pig, I encourage him to come back in a few days after things are better patched up. :)

Thanks for the kind words, Albert.

Hooray! I've been stuck on Level 24 for a week (although I did get through a lot of stuff on my own that I would have normally run to the hints board for). But I'm so close to finishing. (And yeah, I know there's lots of other stuff, but I need a break.)

Missing this forum for two weeks made me realise that I'm probably addicted to it...

At least I had some time to finish other good games, like Blackshift and Within a Deep Forest.

Thanks Erik and Schik, and hopefully the server will stay up this time :thumbsup

Welcome Back - You were missed. Why is it "When you can't have something - You want it." No don't know if you have a counter to know how many times you site is hit or not. I know that I come here just to make sure that you are not doing something that I'm not aware of. Oh - I get the email update but it's not the same.
Glad your back. Now quit reading the posts and get back to work.

Way to Go, Keep up the Good Work :thumbsup

I seem to have found a small error in the forum. If the subject of a post contains ', or \, they are escaped when they are put in the title of the webpage.

For example: This Thread... look at the page title and the thread subject.

Looks like magic quotes is on, or maybe you're using html_entities() before echoing to the <title>. Something like that.

This has already been mentioned in different topics, several times.

Also, don't necro old threads unless you really need to, because it generally annoys people.

Sorry. I didn't realize it was a necro, since the post was still on the front page of this forum. Also, I hadn't seen it mentioned elsewhere. Searching the forum didn't really reveal anything, and I've only been back here for a week or so.

Also, necroing a thread is generally considered better form than creating a brand new one that fulfills the same purpose.

EDIT:
In lieu of creating a new post to respond to eytanz, I'll just say it here. You're right. I misread the first post of this thread, thinking that Schik had asked us to post errors we found. Now that I read it again, it quite obviously does not say that (er, it does... just not here). Maybe I _do_ need to familiarize myself with this forum again, or at least learn how to read. ;)

Er, this is the illumination forum. It's for the newsletter and comments upon it, not for ongoing discussion. Which is why topics stay on the front page for a long time - a new topic are only started once a month. It'sCertainly not for posting bug reports for the forums.

Anyway, the point being that whether or not you realized that it's an old thread, you should have realized this is not the place for such a comment. And if you haven't been here for a while and forgot what goes where, it'd be courteous to your fellow forumers if you take the time to refamiliarize yourself with it again.

Locking this thread--The Illumination is an especially poor forum for necros.
