because other NPCs were talking in the room before the kill, so the sound effect would be delayed from the action of killing if you held the 5 key down... with flush speech, the sound effect always matched, even though one would miss dialog -- I figured people mashing 5 to miss the cutscene weren't going to care about the dialog, anyway. whereas they'd notice and think it a bug if several minutes after the kill, they heard a pop for no apparent reason.
EDIT: since I can't cut and paste scripts, and wanted to side by side them, anyway, the attachment is the scripts of two characters in my hold, the righthand script is the killer of the lefthand script
