There are some advantages to using BMPs, although I think PNGs do lossless compression. If you're doing a puzzle that relies on an array of colours staying more or less the same (as I am) you want that puzzle to be as precise as possible.

Then again, unless you specifically need to use BMP to preserve your puzzle, you really have no excuse not to use JPG or PNG, as even Paint can write to those two formats.

No, there's no advantages of using BMP over PNG for this contest. PNG is equally lossless, much smaller, has more features (alpha, gamma, etc), and so on. A great deal of programs (including Photoshop) has an unoptimized PNG saver so that files won't be as small as they could be, but even unoptimized files should be a fraction of the size of a BMP (well, unless you try using it for photos, but you shouldn't normally be using PNG for that anyway).

The only advantage BMP has over PNG is that it's a very straightforward format, so it's easy to make your own loader/saver.

Well, it wouldn't be possible to solve my second puzzle if I went ahead and changed it from BMP to PNG right now.

I'm going to post something about this on the Site board and maybe Schik will check it out when he has time.

Interesting, but unless you're using a different configuration to most people, I don't see how that is possible (if you trace backwards, Beethro ends up on a pit).

Or am I just misunderstanding what the puzzle actually means?

Well, the pit could have been a trapdoor, but I don't see why those would have to have been Beethro's moves (and not, say 9998).

Doh. The scroll was in the wrong place (meant to deal with tar baby), but yeah, I missed that possibility for the queen. Grr. I'll have another think about it.

edit - fixed, I hope, in original post.

Real men never, ever, test their programs. Actually, I rewrote the whole text more than a few times, so in the end I guess I forgot to check the thing. I will add the semicolon back soon. Thanks!

Oops. Missed that. Erik, are multiple answers allowed, 2 (or more?) to be precise? If not, I'll just remove the top panel and make the answer a more obvious one.

Each puzzle should have one unambiguous answer. Because it's hard to objectively say when a puzzle has one or multiple answers, how well your puzzle fits this criterion will be judged by voters. If you make a puzzle that can be answered different ways, then you should expect to get a lower rating in the upcoming poll.

I was confused about the phrase the last 4 moves until I read the answer. I thought it meant, what were the last 4 moves he made in the room. I figured he died so they were 5555. I may be the only one who read it wrong but, maybe try saying "what 4 moves did he just finish making" or "what were that last 4 moves that got him here". :D

This is an old and familiar puzzle, and not something created by MeckMeck GRE. It's not a copyright problem, but I don't think a non-original puzzle ought to be considered.
