Actually, it's approaching 85% from below, but it gets closer and closer with every 9 you add... thus getting infinitely close with an infinite number of nines...

except that 0.9repeating doesn't mean "a finite number of 9s, depending on where you stop" it means "an infinite number of 9s" and is exactly equal to 1.

I used that notation because I couldn't type the 1 with a bar over it like he did.

And I'm perfectly well aware that .99999999... is equal to 1. After all, 1/3 = .333333.... 3 * .33333333.... is equal to .9999999999... but 1/3 times 3 is also equal to 1. Since it's the same equation, the results are therefore the same.

Wow, the .999999....=1 argument is always fun to watch.

I blame base-10. Or technically base-n, since playing with the mathematical base a little does really interesting things, like base-9 making 1/3 = .3 and 1/2 = .444444... ... And let's not mention the untrue but commonly held belief that even though base-10 1/3 = .333333..., somehow 2/3= .66666666...7 (because the calculator said so!)

Isn't math great? And people wonder why I ran screaming away from mathematics and became an artist...

So, uh, any speculation on what they're working on? I think it's a heavily scripted room in TCB. Possibly plot-related, or just a really, really heavily scripted puzzle. Like the equivalent of the Serpent Bait Machine in JtRH level 8 - that must have taken a while.

Yeah, like I said - it gets infinitely close to 1 (and the difference between 0.999... and one thus converges towards 0, i.e. the difference is getting infinitely small), thus both of course are the same...

(By the way - where did I mention a finite number of nines? Of course you can't calculate this by hand, as you'd need infinite time - that's what limeslimit is for...

Geeez... don't you love it that mathematic terms aren't the same in all languages? We call it "limes", you call it "limit"...)

I HATED that room. But I think they are working on the 2.0.15 patch. Ironing out all the final bugs before 3.0 comes out.

This is the part I was responding to. Tuttle made a true statement and then you "corrected" it incorrectly. It wasn't until your second post where you say "the same" finally, but if you conceive of them as the same, why correct Tuttle in the first place?

84.999|9 is not a moving approximation, it's a fixed single value. it is just a different way of writing 85. much like 80+5 is a different way of writing the same number. it's not "getting" anywhere or "approaching" anything or "converging" on a value - it has already gotten there.

0.99|9 is not defined by the infinite series, it is defined by the result of that infinite series played out already -- of course this is physically impossible, but we can conceive of the value that would result if it were possible, and we have invented a special notation to indicate that value.

I really wish the bar would move faster too. However, to save everyone from persistent emotional tension burnout, I'll report that the bar won't be updated for at least a week. It's possible it will move right after that, but I can't foresee this with certainty. However, be assured that creation still proceeds as before. I'm excited about upcoming works and am not sitting on my duff.
