OK, I know there is a way to trap the slayer, but am wondering if someone could explain his typical movements so I can calculate how far to move before trapping him in the center with the gold button? I had him trapped before I got to this level, is he always able to escape? Any help would be much appreciated:)

A complete explanation of slayer movement rules is way too complicated to explain here.

When the slayer is far away from Beethro, and there is a path to Beethro, the slayer's hook sends out the wisp to find Beethro. When the wisp touches Beethro, the slayer starts to follow the wisp towards Beethro.

When the slayer is in a 4x4 square with Beethro, he stops following the wisp, and follows other complicated movement rules. You don't want that in this room. So make sure you lead the wisp over the trap from the west, and have Beethro wait for him on the east side of the orb.

But that brain-dead challenge scroll expects experienced delvers to not strike the orb at all.
That is impossible to accomplish! Whatever I do, I can never reach that one roach queen in the far corner and get back again before the Slayer has entered the long corridor and trapped me!
And believe me, I've tried giving him the run around by extending his wisp to as long a path as I can manage, but it's never long enough!

(Seriously, this game would be so much easier without these silly challenges) 😓

Challenges are entirely optional, you know :P

But indeed, the way to accomplish this one is to make as long a wisp path as possible, by zigzagging up and down the main area. The wisp path can't step next to itself (or the Slayer would shortcut) so the best you can do is make each column 2 tiles away from the previous one.

I had tried weaving up and down to extend a long wisp, but the spawning roaches would leak out of the corridor and always seemed to approach in a way that I either get killed by it or I have to let the wisp catch up prematurely to avoid that.
Either way, I never was able to extend a long enough wisp path to distract the Slayer.

I had to give up the challenge for tonight because it wasn't worth the trouble. I wanted to actually progress the game before it got late.

I'm not sure how to hint at Slayer manipulation so this will be a little bit spoilery. Hook orientation probably matters; these work from the very start of the room so with hook SE.
