I manage to run two DROD installations on different machines and have them sync up via Dropbox.
The way I've done it is slightly redundant, because I keep the whole of the
data directory up on dropbox.com.
By observation, I see that only the files:
player.dat, save.dat, text.dat, hold.dat and
data.dat are changed during gameplay, but I'm storing the 115MB main hold data file statically on dropbox.
The extra trick I use to keep DROD and dropbox separated is a
symlink. This example is for Windows, running in an administraor shell from the DROD install directory:
0. Create datapath.txt as in previous posts.
1. Move the DROD data directory to your dropbox folder
2. create a symlink
mklink /d Data c:\Users\Karl\Dropbox\Software\Caravel\Engine\Data
Now each DROD installation is sharing the same data, everytime dropbox syncs. Be careful, however, not to run both installations at the same time, because collisions aren't handled gracefully.
This works really well if DROD installed on your desktop and your laptop (I usually plug a full-size keyboard into the laptop so I don't have to change keyboard layouts).
Another occasionally useful feature of this installation style is if you ever get
really stuck, and are prepared to single step through a long demo room.
To do this, you turn off dropbox syncing on one installation, and use this one to setup to replay a demo.
Then play the real thing on the main machine: this is all a bit fiddly to set up, but when you need it, this is all a small price to pay.
Game On.
