Let's say, due to some freakishly unlikely events, that DROD (let's say TCB) is ported to the Xbox 360 as a Live Arcade game. Now, every Live Arcade game has twelve 'achievements', which are little awards doled out for performing specific feats in the game. The Live Arcade sequel to Pacman, for instance, awards an achievement for eating 8 ghosts in a game.
The games that use achievements best generally have a few things in common -
* The spread of achievements go from beginner to expert, so that beginning players can feel like they're progressing and expert players have something new to pull off.
* There's usually at least one achievement that asks players to do something they're not normally going to do in gameplay, but the practice of doing it in some way is the hallmark of an expert. For instance, the Robotron-like shooter Geometry Wars asks players to not fire a shot for the first 60 seconds and survive - the skills you need to use to pull this off are fairly similar to the skills you need at higher levels, where there are more enemies pouring in than you have time to shoot.
* There's usually a couple of achievements that ask you to master some particularly distinctive part of the game, much like our challenges.
* There's usually an achievement for finishing the game, and often some for reaching some important milestone.
* If the game has online capabilities, they always have some achievement for taking advantage of that.
So, you're in charge of coming up with the Xbox port of TCB's achievements. What would you pick? (Each achievement is also supposed to have a point value, although that value may well be 0. You have 200 points for your twelve achievements, if you want to assign the points as well.)
