Elfstone and I were having a discussion the other day about how the Department of Benevolent Influence could enforce a happy Christmas on the forum. We tossed a few ideas around, but a snowball fight won't be much fun for our friends south of the equator and I have enough dinners planned already to keep me going until next December!

So when Elfstone suggested we put up a tree, we both knew that we were on a winner. :thumbsup

Using my powers as Missioner, I set my agents to work gathering decorations while I planted the tree and Elfstone took care of the presents.

I'll let you into a little secret, while everyone was busy getting stuff ready, I had a peek at our present from the Caravel team, and let me tell you, it's a good one. Unfortunately I forgot to wrap it up again and Erik found me out! As a punishment for my naughtiness, and to make sure no-one else peeks, Erik has asked one of the Caravel team to hide our present away until after the tree has been decorated.

My agents have done a good job of tracking down all the decorations we need to cover the tree, but they are all hidden away behind devious puzzles. We're going to need your help to get the tree ready in time for Christmas.

Click here to view the secret text

One of my agents will be along shortly with the decorations.

Steve.

You'd better not break any of these decorations. Luckily for you, we've got everything here in duplicate, right here in this file.

I have my troubles with it. It's maybe because I neither know those birds, nor the Englisch words for them. The only thing I think I know is what word stands behind the ring.

You might want to use Google Image Search then - it's where the images came from.

The final answer is apparently three letters, as stated in the picture.

I've got an answer, but I don't see how it works, since I think the action I'm supposed to take is impossible.

That, or I fell into a red herring - but I don't think you guys would put one in the first puzzle.

EDIT:

Forget that, I miscounted. Now I'm just confused.

May I make a friendly suggestion that all comments to do with the workings of the puzzles be placed in secret tags.
May I also suggest that the discussion topicbe used for detailed conversation on any problems you have with finding the Decorations.
This announcement thread is really for very general comments on the overall Something (which has now happened and does NOT involve me being pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lol :lol :lol

Most likely the thing you don't know is the ... um ... environment these birds (and people) appear in.

Edits to Under the Tree:

Changed red blank on the From: line for "Green Eggs..." from first to third position.
Removed numbers. They were providing redundant information. Look at the colors.
Fixed link to "The One." It's the Jet Li movie.

Puzzle was still solvable before, just had one bad letter. Sorry if this caused any frustration.

Zip Files Changed: Lowest Branches, Whole Shebang

This sounds like it's probably a problem on your end. Do the other files work?

When did you download it, and was it on its own, or with "The Whole Shebang"?

I've tried both.

Do the other files work?

No...

I'm using Mac OSX and when I try to unzip I get a message that says,

Unable to unarchive [file] into [folder]. (Error 1 - operation not permitted.)

Bob - I've just checked in the light of H's comment - the zips don't work for me either. (I hadn't noticed because I hadn't used the zips because I had access to the original files,)

I got a similar message with "Error 78-Function not implemented".

? :?

HH - try opening the file by Control-click>Open with> Stuffit expander.

I did that and was then asked for a decryption password, which I assume would be the answer to the previous puzzle - which I don't have at the moment; so it looks as though it will open in OS 10

Hey, Chaco's Christmas Fun Time has a Bad CRC after inputting the password, which works on Dungeon Gameshow. (Both from Whole Shebang) No such error extracting the Highest Branches from the Whole Shebang, though. And the error doesn't happen in the stand-alone.

Unfortunately, I know basically nothing about the zip format, so I probably won't be of much use with troubleshooting. All I know is that it has worked with other people so far.

I created the files with WinZip. I don't know if that would cause a problem with Macs or with other unzipping clients. It was an old version (probably early 2005-ish) which continued to work after the evaluation period ended, so I kept using it. I'm not currently at the computer used to create the files, so I can't version-check.

Anybody here have more knowledge on the subject?
