Okay, Oneiromancer. You've had your fun. I've managed to kill almost everything in the room, including the NE snake (which was pretty ingenious)

However, the problem here is the snake at 1. No amount of maneuvering seems to make a guard want to go into the chamber. I can't seem to persuade a mud baby to get in there either.

Now, it might be possible if I got mud to grow to that spot. However, should I wait in the left-hand side of the middle passage and let the appropriate blob grow to that spot, it will block up the passage and I won't be able to escape. I also can't hide on the arrow, since I won't be able to cut the mud.

So, what do I use to kill that snake?

Well, the first clue is, of course, mud babies!

Simple, no?

That was the part I didn't get.

That's doable, though I think you're thinking of Magic Show and not of JtRH.

I haven't played Magic Show, actually. I was thinking of Journey to Rooted Hold : Eighteenth Level : 1 South, 2 West. Maybe I mis-remembered the strategy, though.

I don't think you needed to grow mudbabies, but you did need to keep that mud mother alive for a while. Mostly because you couldn't afford the time to kill her early.

But since you can't kill the mud mother right away, you need to make it so the entrance isn't blocked, as it would be if you totally ignored that area. Thus the similarity.

Yeah. I was agreeing with you, although I probably did a lousy job of it.

Can someone tell me how to kill the NE snake? And please don't tell me I need two guards alive or the mud mother alive to do it. :-)

I'm having trouble with this room. I can see the principle behind killing all of the snakes except the NW one, and I know that I need the mud mother alive for the middle one.

I can't figure out a way to keep the mud mother alive - I know it'll involve trapping something in there so that you can slice a corner, but I can't seem to get anything trapped. I also can't see how to force something into the NE snakehole without the mud mother being alive.

How do you trap something in there such that the mud mother lives?

EDIT: OK, figured out how to trap a guard with the mud mother, but I can't figure out how to get something into the NE snakehole!

EDIT: Never mind! Managed to get it. I only needed the guard to keep the mud mother alive, didn't need him for anything else.

Thanks :) It was the solution that was obvious to me (eventually). It's great the way two people can see two different solutions this way :)

I think I'll leave the secret room alone for now though, it looks evil.

Knowing that you can win from that position, I bet you can figure out how to get the snake yourself. Read only as much as you need:

I am having trouble even starting this room; it may be that this hold in general is too hard for me, though I was able to solve other rooms without help.

I understand the comments posted so far, but I'm messing up at the start.

This being so, may I request a demo? I've been trying for days and feel bewildered.

Okay, what you've said gives me the determination/courage to keep going. There are a couple of things I don't see how to do without doing what you said I needn't, but that's nothing new in DROD. With your assurance, rather than provide a demo immortalizing my foolishness, I'll dive in again. Thank you!

Minutes later: And indeed I solved the beginning -- easily, even. Sometimes knowing what's doable makes all the difference. Thank you again. Onward to the rest....

Still later: Finished the room, no problem. It was just that weird block I gave myself about the beginning. It baffles even me now that I made such a big deal for myself about it.
