I was actually rather fond of Pokemon Puzzle League--it wasn't too terribly done.

I second mrimer's 3, and all sequels/variations.

Trying to remain mostly modern:
Lemmings, Chromadrome, Troddlers, Professor Fizzwizzle (though I've yet to be hooked but I see the potential), Bridge Builder/Pontifex (I'm glad I thought of that one - a puzzle game which actually teaches something is a masterpiece in its own right), Dave the worm (optimised timings seem weird though), Enigma, Fools Gold, Gruntz (under-rated - 100% is *hard*), Marble Blast (yes, arcady but requires intelligence similar to problem solving), Vikings series (cute/fun).

And finally, the one and only... Supaplex

Took me just over 10 years to finish the 111 levels. I obviously didn't play every day (at all), but what is more remarkable - a game can be hard enough to take so long, or that a game can keep you enthralled for that long? Supaplex obviously did both for me...

At the risk of starting something that gets out of control, can I challenge whether Tetris and its variants can be considered as being puzzles? Tetris is a very good game but IMHO it isn't a puzzle. Quick reactions are needed but no thought, no reasoning, no logic, no strategy, no prior knowledge, and no trial and error. Just my opinion of course, you guyz may say different.

Yes, it should be recognized as a different genre. It's the same as a real-time strategy like Warcraft vs. pure strategy like Risk.

The time element is crucial - if Tetris pieces wouldn't fall until you pick a spot for them it would be pure puzzle.

PS: Why would you need prior knowledge? Good puzzles don't need that...

Prior knowledge - some puzzles do, some don't. Many crosswords puzzles do require knowledge beyond purely vocabulary, for example. But yes, a well designed purely abstract puzzle is a beautiful thing.

Never got very far in Supaplex myself, have to give it another try. Did you know that there are a lot more than 111 levels?

Add Boulder Dash to the list if you're going to add any of its clones! :)

I always rather liked Pipeline Plus, on Superior Interactive.

Oh, and Phoenix Wright.

Would you consider Phoenix Wright a puzzle game? I'm not sure what to classify it, put puzzle game is not it.

I think Phoenix Wright is far more of a puzzle game than an adventure game, because it has a fairly fixed pattern to the problems it asks the player to olve: "read the text, identify the false statements". Adventure game "puzzles" tend to be far less logical than that and more based on exploration - yes, there is exploration in PW, but only a limited amount (there's about, what, 5-6 rooms per case?) and none at all in the court sequences.

Yeah, but in the second and third ones there's a bit more of an exploring feel to it than the first one.

I've only played the first two games. I nearly got caught up fan-translating the third but feared that madness lay that way :p

Yeah, I'd be doing it right now, but I don't know a thing about Japanese.

I feel like we've gotten too far off track. Should we start a new thread?

Oh, well, I'll try to get back on track by saying, thanks for the pointer to Fish Fillets 2. Not what I was expecting given the name.. but dang.. that's an evil game mechanic.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned BlackShift.

It contains, well, puzzles. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, has a really large amount of included levels, and best of all, has a level editor!
