I just wanted to show this one. My wife can't see any movement... Personally, I get a headache just looking at it. If you are having trouble seeing the sickening motion, just try to count how many columns of "almonds" there are... that should set it off.

I'll post an optical illusion here every so often. Some of them will be offsite, as they aren't just a single picture. I have one in mind, in particular, that really blows my mind.

Here's one that truly blows my mind. First off, check out this little black and white picture, here. Nothing to it, eh? Go ahead and open it up in a new window, just so you can isolate it from the upcoming image.

Now, take a few minutes and stare at these colored pictures:

Doesn't matter if you stare at any one point, just spend about 3 minutes really letting them soak in. Afterward, go check out that original white and black picture.

You will see a green haze around the horizontal lines, and a magenta haze around the vertical lines. It varies between people, but for me, it's staggering. Plus, it's been known to last for more than just a few minutes. Typically, it lasts for a few hours.

It's called the McCollough Effect, and no one knows exactly how or why it works.

Here's a wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCollough_effect

Enjoy! :)

I see some motion with the almands, though it isn't striking enough to give me an headache (or prevent me from counting every single of those almands, if that strikes my fancy).

The second one didn't produce anything in my case. I guess that could be a problem of focus on my part.

This one scares me a lot.

See post below

Keep Your Eyes On The Dots

You see a circle of violet dots.
Each of them disappears in order, like moving in a circle.

Concentrate your sight at the cross, you will notice a green dot in the empty space.

Keep looking at the cross, and all the violet dots will disappear, and the green dot will keep moving!

No credits?

I'm pretty sure that the almonds came from Akiyoshi Kitaoka.

The purple dots came from Jeremy Hinton, and I *think* it's originally found in this collection of illusions.

The crossbars, well, I have no clue.

I gave credit for the one I knew (McColluough effect)! Otherwise, I just save these to my hard drive every so often, so... nope.

Very cool. I love optical illusions.

Has everyone seen Random Dot Sterograms?
RDSs are pictures with repeated horizontal patterns that give the illusion of a 3d image.

Here's a random site with some:

Have I ever! I still have my big "Magic Eye Poster" that I got about 15 years ago, when they were popping up all over the place. (See the movie Mallrats for a good example of that.)

I can actually make it so those pictures come out at you, like they are supposed to, but I can also make them go INTO the page, creating sort of a "mold" of the image. I can actually do this over and over again, making things look really crazy if I "stack" them.

Yeah, I loved those things back in the 90s. :yes

I can't make them come out. I have trouble defocusing my eyes properly. (properly mind you. Losing focus is easy.) But I've taught myself to go crosseyed, so getting them in is easy.

I know the science behind those ones, but not how to make them. Basically, you fool your eyes into focusing onto two seperate things, but since they look close enough together, your brain forces them to retain the focus. Then, having done that, subtle variations between the two patterns make it so that you see a 3-d image.

Heh heh, those are my favorites of all time. I have books and books of them lying around. I too have the uncanny ability of popping the images in, as does the rest of my family. Well, except my Mom can't see them at all, she was born with only one eye.

But Ezlo, i can only see them poping into the picture. My eyes will go cross-eyed when i look at them, so i can never see them the real way. :weep

AARRGH. I HATE MAGIC EYE!

I'm really bad at crossing my eyes and I simply can't see *anything* out of those things.

The other illusions - fine, but I've seen them before.

This is gonna sound paranoid, but ever since I watched Optical Sabotage, I've been afraid of optical illusions. But the ones on this page are great! I like these ones a lot!

Yeah, I hate those stupid things. I swear I would never post one of those "shock flashes" on here. It's so corny. :)

The way to deal with those flash scarer things is to keep your speakers turned off when looking at optical illusions -- the scream is a pretty essential part of the scaring.

As for illusions, I love this one where the dragon's head follows you around. There's a video here which demonstrates it really well.

There's a place called Puzzling World in Wanaka, New Zealand which has a room full of faces which cause that effect -- you walk around and an entire wall of Albert Einsteins or Nelson Mandelas follows you. :)
