So, I've got a friend who I'm slowly helping through King Dugan's Dungeon (AE version). She's in the midst of Level 15 (lots of trapdoor puzzles) right now, and is expressing extreme enjoyment of the trapdoor puzzles, particularly after some of the hellish rooms (for a beginner) involved in Level 14.

So, here's my question. If, based on her enjoyment of Level 15, I was going to recomment a hold to her, what would be the best one to pick?

She *is* using the current JtRH demo, so any hold will work, don't have to limit things to AE holds.

Well, I'd recommend The Trapdoor Chronicles :)

Beyond that, I'm not really sure... Is it actually trapdoors she likes, or is it the more general theme of path-based rooms?

I only know a couple holds specifically made for trapdoor puzzles, but both were pretty dull, in my opinion. They are the Trapdoor chronicles and Pitways.

Other holds that seem to include some tricky trapdoor puzzles are:
- A Quiet Place, especially level 5. Challenging but a quite a bit easier than the current challenging holds.
- Nanfro Budkin's First Dungeon in various places. I've found that one to be quite tough, and the last level is hellish.
- I think Jacob's holds include more than a few trapdoor puzzles, The Domain of the Grinfidel in particular.
- I seem to recall Bavato's Dungeon has some trapdoor puzzles as well, but I've not gone any further than level 3 on my current player file. I did get deeper in the dungeon on AE, but I've lost the relevant player file.
- I quite like Doom's use of trapdoors in puzzles, but that would be a fairly different theme. Still, I've got to plug Doom's holds whenever I can.

Bavato's Dungeon level 7, to be precise. But, uh, don't you think Bavato's is a little, say, hard for someone who hasn't beaten KDD yet? O_o'

I think it's the path-based rooms. The ones she said really stood out were 1N3W and 1S2W.

And I wouldn't throw Bavato's at her; *I* haven't even managed to get any farther than maybe the second floor in that one.

I also gave her the Wrong Parity hold from in the Architecture forum; she's not looked at it yet as she's banging her head against the two-mimics trapdoor puzzle in KDD L15, but I've urged her to play it before she goes into L16, which I don't think she'll much like given her reaction to L9.

I've found the first half of Bavato to be relatively nice, with an almost perfect balance. Then again, I have the feeling that Bavato has a much better curve than most other holds I can think of, at least up to the level I've reached *back then*.

Of course, take that as the word of someone who still hasn't beat level 15 of KDD in half a decade of play. So, virtually anything would qualify as "easier than level 15" in my book. Corollary, anyone who can beat and, gasp, *enjoy* level 15 is ready to take down any other hold out there.

Somehow I doubt being able to handle pathfinding with trapdoors and orbs will get you through a War hold ;)

Phil's Dungeon is one of my favourite user made holds. There are some nice trap door puzzles on level three, but I think most of the other levels would also be enjoyable. A couple of rooms might be rather challenging to someone who hasn't completed KDD or JtRH, but most of the hold should be OK and then there's always the hints board if you really get stuck.

Hmmm, King Pilchard's Dungeon has some nice trapdoor puzzles, would be reasonably easy for a beginner, and its a lot of fun.

Claythro tower has alot of beautiful geometrical trapdoor rooms, but it would be rather vicious for beginners.

Don't forget Bavato's has a warp room, so if she really wanted to try it, she could just straight ot the trapdoor puzzles on level 7

The first level of Oddyssey has mainly path based puzzles (a trapdoor one and two arrow maze ones).

Domain of the Grindfidel scatters in quite a few trapdoor puzzles, but if she's not used to Jacob's rather lateral thinking could just frustrate her.

Palace of Puzzles recreates some classic non-electronic puzzles, including some path finders.

Tunnel Vision does good path puzzles using tunnels instead of trapdoors.

OK... I gave her Puzzleboat, Palace of Puzzles, Pelcho's Puzzles, and the beta for Sunken Pyramid last night, and she seems to be enjoying those ones. I believe her reaction to the Sokoban puzzle in Palace was something along the lines of 'How did they *do* that?'

Ah, the introduction of a newbie who's only played KDD to scripting... :)

But does she enjoy other kind of holds than trapdoor puzzles?

I haven't quite figured that out yet. She seemed to absolutely loathe the goblins on L14 (I haven't had the heart to tell her about brains or The Neather yet)... I'll toss Pilchard's her way and wait to get yelled at because of that Slayer challenge early on or something ^^;;

Well, Chaco's Dungeon level 10 has some nice trapdoor puzzles, hoping she doesn't go right first >_<

You can't - you have to beat the Trapdoor Building before you can go into the Middle Prison.

However, this would only be viable if she skipped to that level - I don't think she'd like the restriction puzzles in level 7.

That, and it's a work in progress that will undoubtedly be changed.
