It seems that somehow my place has other stuff from the dust storm as well. If you think there are stuff here that belongs to you, just take it.

I haven't followed the contest threads lately, so if there is anything I need to do to give things back, please tell me.

Thanks Tim - you don't seem to have anything belonging to me, but it is possible that I have thing(s) belonging to you; I have quite a lot of new items which have not been claimed yet. Have a look here and if you want any of it just let me know.

Elf.

The contest portion of Virtual Burning Man has finished aside from voting, but there is no harm in keeping VBM going for as long as people care too. If there's interest in continuing, just let me know, and I can move the topics over to "Forum Games".

Ah, dang. I was hoping it would be over later.

For those of you interested, I was trying to set up a sort of a bicycle obstacle course, with the beanbags being used from the helicopter somehow - but I couldn't put it all together. Obviously, getting most of my stuff back would be unoriginal and dull.

This was pretty fun, even though I sort of occupied myself with DRODer! by the end and only visited two different campsites. What I'd like to know is the solution to Robobob's riddle. I could glean that the letters were probably worth something in different M&M's, but it didn't add up and I started getting fractions after a while.

At first I was just going to display random amounts of M&M's and squirt people whenever I felt like it. I wanted to have a highly eccentric booth. But then I decided that would upset people, so I created some order to what was going on.

For those not involved, players deposited an item in a milk crate by my booth. I responded by dishing out various amounts of colored M&Ms.

The yellow M&M's represented the number of different vowels represented. For example, CHOCOLATE had an AEO, so there would have been three yellows, regardless of the double. Although it never occurred, deposits with a Y would have received an additional smashed yellow M&M.

Red was the number of letters in the word minus three.

Green was the number of consonants in the word before the first vowel.

Blue was the number of letters that occurred in the word more than once.

Speaking or placing an item in the crate that was larger than the crate got you squirted with my Super Soaker.

The mystery item was:

? OO OOOOOO

Tuttle figured out that I was looking for a

Very clever. And it's nice that you finally gave us the answer. Any chance that I can have the final item list? I'd like to see what it was, so that I can see if my friend can work out what the missing item was.

JBluestein is dripping wet.
I assume that he wasn't able to remain silent...

Sorry to be so late with this wrap-up. I've been hustling hard to get DROD: The City Beneath dialogue ready to record.

Virtual Burning Man went off great! The people here displayed a lot of freeform creativity. My only regret is that I didn't visit campsites myself. So I don't even really know what campsite owners did that gained so much appreciation. When I came back from the real Burning Man, I had similar thoughts like "why didn't I go visit that one cool place--the one where everyone glued feathers to their skin and jumped on trampolines?" Oh well.

What I did see was a lot of enthusiasm and--weirdly--a strong sense of ownership. It really seemed to matter to people when their stuff got randomly redistributed by my storm. I didn't think people would try so hard to get back their original inventory. Techant's efforts to save her virtual animals actually made me feel a little guilty. There are other more-developed computerized worlds--MUDs and MMOGs--out there that don't make you work so hard to support the reality. The software will manage your inventory, track where you are in the world, and enforce what you can and can't do. I'm encouraged that we can ad-hoc something together with just our forum as the supporting technology, and hey, it actually works! Imagine what could be done with some specialized software behind it all.

But that's a different story. Let's get back to the contest...

Jason won 3rd-place after we ran a tie-breaker poll between Someone Else and The_Red_Hawk. (By the way, the tie-breaker poll reminds me of why we switched over to the "ratings" style polls long ago. What if the tie-breaker poll had been another tie?) Jason gets 25 rank points.

I think many people were intrigued by EytanZ's decision to just bring one potato with him to Virtual Burning Man. It showed a certain sense of... what's the word, I want... counter-munchkinism. Eytan gets 50 rank points.

Long-long-time contest participant, Techant, has won her first contest. Congratulations! Techant, you get 100 rank points and any item of your choice from the Prize Pile. Also, don't forget you still have the "Bully Pulpit" prize from "Don't Ask", where you get to post an announcement of your choice in the scrolling marquee shown on DROD's title screen.

Who were the rookies? Lardarse and Drgamer joined us for their first contest. We appreciate newcomers, so they both get 10 rank points.

Much thanks to all who participated!

-Erik
