I like the idea of, like. Little gizmos and gadgets that don't add much to the room in terms of puzzle use, but are nifty just because they are.

For instance: We all remember what it's like to hallucinate in Nethack. If you don't, why the hell haven't you played Nethack more than ten minutes? GO! GO! THE FATE OF THE WORLD DEPENDS ON IT!

For the rest of you: Tell me it would not be entertaining to have these potions. Would they actually affect monster movement or Beethro's movement? Hell no. It would just be a visual effect, and you could cycle through a bunch of monsters and NPCs.

Yes, this could be put to terrible use. But in general, the idea of little gadgets that are just /interesting to look at/ instead of puzzle-related intrigue me.

Like, I don't know. It'd be along the line of obstacles, except mildly and harmlessly interactive. Cobwebs you stumble through. Beethro would grunt, make the angry noise, and they'd clear. No puzzle effect.

So, to summarize...things to produce, I dunno, ambience? Would be kind of cool.

But what if you put cobwebs in a stuttered pattern around a tar clump like in this room? Then it'd make babies like crazy and you'd need to waste a move to remove them!

That's why they're there for ambience. They don't effect puzzles at all--tar would grow over it.

I think the suggestion is just to give more of a "dungeony" feel to the game--Things that haven't been explored are dusty, cobwebby, etc.

And about halfway through a room full of them he starts mumbling "The Itsy Bitsy (Grebbing) Spider" under his breath , cursing and slashing around with his sword

Character tiles and multiple custom floor images, mayhaps?

Hardcoding a particular interactable tile would probably be too limited and mostly be scoffed aside by architects...

The suggestions I saw here wouldn't be served just by custom floors, this would require either a new 'scenery' layer (to prevent it from having any actual game effect), or a new type of custom floor that has changable appearance and sound effects associated with each look.

Either way, probably quite a lot of effort, although some common atmospherics might be worthwhile. But do we really want to KNOW Beethro is wading ankle deep through wraithwing guano whenever he walks near a pit?

Wouldn't they ignite the wraithwing guano?

And then you could make leaf juice cups out of it!

I always wanted to have some little tiny spiders walking randomly on the floor which can be stomped on, and some spiders walking on the walls which can be cut by the sword :). I love such details ;)

I recognised it too. Feel relieved that you have more of a life than some 15-year-old male Brit!
