...You can use both? I seem to recall doing it in one, and going 'oh, the other one is a red herring.'

Well, the way the room is set up makes it kinda look like the second one might need to be used. Yes, I did it with two. But indeed, I could also do it with one, as some experimenting found.

I dunno. If the original, intended solution used one, then it kinda defeats the purpose of the challenge.
