Have you tested these by making a custom character in DROD and importing the portraits to use for the character, to be sure they're the correct size?

I'd like to know if they are so I know what size to make my own character sketch.

This is a good idea. Kudos.

Without trying them out, I'm a bit concerned that the background colors are so different from image to image. That could be a bit too distracting as it changes. I think in certain cases, more subtle shade changes within the same basic color/fade pattern would be just fine. The difference between top left and bottom left above is about as far as I'd take it at first guess, but it really depends how the transition looks in-game. Especially if those two with the X-eyes are supposed to replace dying-Beethro-with-tongue-out, they would absolutely need to have identical backgrounds, with the speed the engine switches through those things.
