Consider for a brief moment, the possibility of a fifth option.

Anyone Edit
You and Conquerors
You and Masters
Only You
When Flagged

So, for instance, instead of completing all secret rooms, it would be sufficient to find one with an NPC in it. Or maybe you'd have to complete a challenge in a room to unlock editing the hold. Or, you know. Whatever else. You would flag it with an object scripting command.

This no more affects 'information from rooms affects other rooms' any more than the other ones, and simply offers more flexibility and control over when other people can edit your hold.

So, you could let people edit the hold only after they've post-mastered it by way of a blue door in the post-mastery level. That would be very useful if you didn't want people jumping around that level before solving it.

I am all for it! This would help me immensely in the hold I'm making.

Could you give me an example, Ezlo? I'm failing to see the benefit from a cursory examination, so a real-world application would be very handy.

I have a hold that the story doesn't end until WAY after the master wall is dropped. I really want it to be editable once people are done there.

not as far as I know, and although it could be a very easy way to have 'conditional unlocking', it would also make it able to be used as a cheat, which IMHO, isn't a good idea.

Another use of this conditional unlocking would be for architects who are in the beta testing stage, as they could then have it so they have to play properly up until a certain point, which is unplayable unless in the editor.

Yet another way that I think that this 'conditional unlocking' could occur is to have only part of the hold editable. This could be used again by beta holds(hide secret levels), or by holds that where impossible up to a certain point, where the architect fixed it, but in order for those who don't want to play through the hold again to see the ending, just allows the last room to be anyone edit.

The question is, how would this be implemented? would they just have to enter a room? would it be something that Beethro stood on, or would it be a 'unlock hold in editor' script command?

My friend unlocks hold editing using only simple hex-editor in less than 5 minutes (You have to backup .dat files before this operation because one time it gone wrong :( ). So all these barriers are useless.

I think that the aim of these barriers is to try and remove the temptation of looking ahead, and thus spoiling the hold, when you're a bit stuck. As such I think they do a perfectly adequate job as for the majority of DROD players they make unlocking a hold for editing distinctly non-trivial. Inevitably as DROD is an open source program it is impossible to stop people circumventing them. Indeed at the moment you simply need to a set a particular compiler define before compiling the DROD code to build a version capable of doing just that.

Like I said, unlock hold in editor script command.

Actually, I think a better way to do would be to have a room markable as "Required for editing", which means that if the room hasn't been visited/cleared (depending on how it's implemented), the hold can't be edited, regardless of other settings.

Presumably this feature would come with a 'mark all rooms in this level as "Required for editing"' button in the editor.
