Now that was a rather long domainsite.com nameserver outage.

Maybe they shouldn't store all 4 nameservers in a cupboard in their mom's basement; waaay to crash-prone... :)

I missed the forum, but I got my fix listening to the music of Lars Kristiaan Andersen (did I spell that correctly?).

Edit: It's Lars Kristian Aasbrenn. I got him confused with that other great "composer", Hans.

All the nameservers that the site uses at domainsite.com went down for some reason. This meant that, whilst the forum was up, you couldn't get to it as the domain name wasn't being resolved into an IP address.

In simpler terms, the store was open, but the address numbers were removed and it disappeared from all existing maps... :)

Note to self: record forum IP in case that happens again.

EDIT: Seems you aren't using top-level domain management. CURSE YOU for ruining my plans... err... making me unable to look at the forum sometimes.

In that case, what IS the forum IP?

Also, its good to see that it had nothing to do with Caravel games personally.

However, since one server seems to host multiple subdomains, it's not like some servers where you just type in the IP and the site pops up. There's a certain filepath that has to be taken, and that's the problem. I tried the four most likely paths, and the forum isn't there. So, I have no idea.

Dang server people, not knowing enough to have backup servers, just in case (Or at least backup servers away from the servers they're backing up)

That's good information, Coppro. Yeah, the webserver is configured such that it requires a domain name to know which website to serve.

For the persistent and technically minded, you can edit a local hosts file (lmhosts on most Windows machines) to set up caravelgames.com to point to the above IP address and it will get you through name server downage.

But honestly, we shouldn't have to put up with this. I'm going to ditch Domainsite pretty quick. Anybody have some real experience running a website with a nameserver that stayed up at least 355 days of the year? I've heard good things about godaddy and joker.

Can't help you with your choice of DNS service, but are you really sure 10 days a year of downtime are acceptable? *scratches head*

12 x 30 = 360

Now, think about it: Are there more months with more or less than 30 days? ;)

There is? I always thought it was about 265.25 days in a year, or close to that anyway

Damn post collision.
