11 by 11 seems to be a good size for one-snake JSPs. They're large enough to incorporate intricate designs, making the puzzle tricky, but small enough for simple ones. In addition, 11 by 11 means you can make both horizontally/vertically symmetrical designs, as well as ones that use rotational symmetry.

EDIT:

Also, here's one (of probably several) solutions to matchu's second puzzle:

Thanks for the heads up, Chaco. I needed to hit f5 to refresh for the new graphics.

This contest game is going to get really messy, really quickly (and then after that, quicker and even more quickly).

matchu,

for the second puzzle, which direction is the snake facing initially?

[edit] Weird... I wasn't seeing the design as symmetrical until I read it was :P

It doesn't matter, the solution numbers are the same any which way. It's rotationally symmetrical too.

matchu really seems to like the Jumping Snake Puzzles.

And here's the solution to it, which took only a couple of minutes. I'm not really sure there are many ways to get stuck in this style of puzzle.

Yeah, I just thought it would look cool for the whole novelty thing.

There's a simple method to beat either of those two puzzles:

Maybe it has to do with rotational symmetry?

No, I don't think its the rotational symmetry, just the design you used.

Let's do away with the starting spot... The question: Where do you start?

Hmm. Interesting. My first guess is in one of the four corners. I'll go test it, but obviously there are only a quarter of normal spots possible since there's rotational symmetry.

Well, if you force a start going north, the only redundant spot is in the center. :)

Well, yeah, but Matchu proved that in rotational symmetry, all starting points are still solvable using exactly the same moves if rotated accordingly.

I just submote a solution in the other thread, using the output from the Nifty Java Applet Thingy. Myself, I don't understand the required notation at all:
ErikH2000 wrote in the submission thread:
... the solution to the first puzzle can be given like this: 3, 11, 21, 25, 26, 28, 32, 36, 37, 39, 40.
By my understanding of the notation (as described by Brainy on p.1 of this thread), this solution doesn't match the one in the image, and it doesn't seem to be an alternate solution either. I can follow through the first two jumps, but then on what I think is turn 21 there's no decision point: the snake will turn left, jump or no jump. Also, how do you get up to turn 40 on a board with 37 squares?

Hmm.. thats a good point. It doesn't match at all. I never looked at it past the very first jump.. and it seems nobody else did, either, until now :)

The reason it doesn't match is that Erik made a mistake when changing the images to the new style. Attached is an image from the applet showing the original puzzle and Erik's solution.

...Weird, I got that from googling "Java 1.5 Windows"

I think what you have to do is go to the Apple page, I think they've got a copy of the latest Java runtime environment... I'm not sure, since I got my copy of Java 1.5 from Software Update :/

Here's a picture that gives you an idea of what the contest game will look like:

Huge!

The picture is very large and may shrink to fit on the page depending what browser you have. In that case, don't forget to zoom in to full scale. And actually, it's kind of cool to look at the map in a shrinked view too. Looks kinda like a circuit board. So that nobody misses out, here is a shrunken image:

Medium-sized!

This image is generated from the software I wrote to handle updating the game. The example arena is one I made up pretty quickly, and isn't the one that people will be competing in for the contest. This image shows 100 AI-controlled snakes after 300 or so turns. It's fun to try to trace the path of one snake through all of the different loops.

There are a few extra rules for the contest game that weren't in place for the puzzles:
* The goal is not to cover all space, but is instead to survive longer than the other snakes by continuing to find space in which you can move.
* Jumps over live snake heads (black heads) are not allowed.

Another post is coming that explains the contest properly.

Yeah, I'll do what I can to make things fair, but there is no doubt that unfair situations will come up.
