The sword is as big (or as long anyway) as Beethro - it takes up a full cell. However, it looks more like a shortsword in the picture.

It's a trick of perspective. First, I think the sword starts up a bit higher than it might appear - the sword's hilt and Beethro's hand are merged together in the distance. Second, Beethro is probably not holding it straight ahead but slightly away from the "camera".
