Within a Deep Forest

Freeware platformer with a focus on exploration and atmosphere. You bounce around with a ball and collect new materials so you can get to different places. Not much to be said about it, except that it's really well done.

This is a great find! Thanks Nillo!

It's a room-based platformer... no scrolling at all, so lots of secrets and misdirection, and Adventure!

I've only got one material power-up so far, but I already know this will be my "Cave Story" game of 2006.

EDIT: Finished too! Very compelling and full of detail and delight. The inclusion of a speed run mode is inviting, since I am currently into Metroid: Zero Mission 15% runs.

This is a really cool game... Spent most of the day playing it instead of working.

I've gotten balls 1-8 so far - maybe I'll finish the game today.

Edit: Gotten all the balls. But the final level is too hard for me at the moment - I'm too tired for reflexes.

Edit: Couldn't stay away. Beat the game. Now to unlock the secret levels...

It's not really worth it. At least for the rewards... (Hunting for the secrets is probably more fun)

Despite what one might think, the unlockables aren't related to the game in any way. They're just very simple minigames - Similar to something you can find on dozens of flash game sites already.

The game itself was pretty fun. Definitely not too easy (the Crystal level, in which you control the glass ball was the hardest to me), but not frustratingly hard either. Two thumbs up! :thumbsup

Yeah, I realized that from their forums - I'm more interested in A - finding the codes, and B - entering the code (also not trivial but I don't want to spoil it for other players) than the actual secrets.

Done! Really good game. My favorite material had to be number 5. Tons of good ways to create levels around that one. On the forums it was mentioned that this guy has made more games, but where are they? I couldn't find them.

Ezlo, here's his site,

[url=http://nifflas.ni2.se/ http://nifflas.ni2.se/

Operatr Status is an earlier version of WaDF, as it has a bouncing ball with similar level design, but is much more difficult and has gravity changing!

Great game! I got all the forms and I know how to get into the underwater passage, but I need to get to bed, so I will finish the game tomorrow.

Here's another platformer with some interesting puzzle ideas that I saw on GameHippo today: Vivid Conceptions. I'll be working on that next after I beat Within a Deep Forest.

Game on,

I've finished it as well, although I have one extra code that I haven't tried entering in yet. Great game.

Edit: Okay, so I entered the code I found, allegedly unlocked a secret, but don't know where to go to see this secret.

I beat it earlier tonight. Which was really a challenge because I had the New Super Mario Bros game sitting right next to me, begging to be played. But I wanted to finish what I started with this one since I was so close to the end. I'm not going to worry about the codes at all, I think.

On to New SMB! :D

Hmmmmm... Which to choose? The first new Mario Bros. 2d platformer in a decade? Or a game where you play a white blob with phycic powers? I'd choose Mario first, but unfortunatly, I don't quite have the money.

Yeah yeah yeah...I had totally forgotten that New SMB was coming out when I made that first post. But since I have the money, unlike Ezlo unfortunately, I chose New SMB over the free game that I will get to eventually.

Zmann: so far it's pretty fun. I'm doing okay at finding secret levels, and I am working on World 4 right now, which is the first secret world (I had already beaten World 3 and unlocked World 5, but I went back to unlock 4 and play through it). There are 3 coins in every level to collect, and secret exits, although it's not as obvious like in Super Mario World. And sometimes the exits are hidden past vines in invisible blocks, which means you really don't have any hints, unlike SMW. Anyway, good retro platforming fun in general. Not too difficult unless you're trying for the coins or the secrets it seems.

Game on,

Just got through this very cool game last night.

It's almost too hard for me. I would find myself getting very angry about having to repeat the same movements when the checkpoints are far apart. But I wanted to get further into the game pretty badly, so I kept at it. My favorite ball is the yoga ball, because it can reach fairly high but isn't too hard to control.

The Crystal Path was the hardest part of the game for me. I ended up playing it just after I got ball 6 (yoga ball), and I guess it's better to wait for some of the other balls. Some of the dead-ends would take a half hour for me to reach and then find out I had to go back. Brutal!

I contacted Mifflas and got permission to add WADF to the Smitemaster's Selection CD. The game's worth evangelizing a bit.

WADF wants a level editor to fully realize its potential.

I agree! The speed runs are a cool idea, but it can only be fun for so long when you can beat the game in its entirety in 20 minutes :)

I just rebooted my computer tonight, and AVG Anti-Virus apparently found a trojan horse in two of the WADF .exe files. I'm not sure why they would be there and undetected until now...hopefully it was a false positive. But I uninstalled it anyway, just to be safe. Has this happened to anyone else? I'll definitely be running a scan tonight to see if I have something else and it just chose those files to infect first or something...

Game on,
Well I just downloaded the zip versin, and bit-defender couldn't find anything, so the chances are that its a false positive.

Me too, and as that is on top of PestPatrol flagging this program up as being infected I deleted it as well. There are a lot of false positives reported by anti-virus and ant-spyware software but two strikes and you're out is my general rule.

Thanks John. I ran the full AVG overnight and it apparently found the same trojan in Treasure Tower (which I think was linked to on this forum as well) and also in my backup copies of WADF and TT on my extra hard drive. My last backup of the entire computer was 9 months ago, so if there really is a trojan then it was there from the beginning. If AVG hadn't caught it at first upon computer startup then I'd think it might be a false positive.

Anyway, it is possible that NiroZ downloaded it from a different website, or the file has changed since we all tried it and the trojan was removed if it was really there. I seem to be clean otherwise but I'll scan again tonight just in case (it was the Generic2 trojan which can be really tough to remove according to Google searches).

Game on,

One explanation for AVG detecting it now and not before is an upgrade to their virus signatures/definition list so as to now include the Trojan that it claims WADF is infected with. As a non-expert I'd guess that is the most likely reason but people with more knowledge might know otherwise.

John
