This technique is known as backswiping. It's just a regular move, but it's easy to overlook because it appears as if Beethro is dead in this situation.

Yes, I would have said Beethro was dead in that situation, too.

The advice of Gunthro Budkin, in the help files, says that "there is no defense against enemies that approach from different directions."

No one taught him this move, apparently.

Nope. There is no defense against enemies from different directions, not an enemy from a different direction - i.e. something like this:

I would argue that RBR is indeed "enemies from different directions, though." There are 2 roaches, and they are approaching from different directions.

I understand what you mean, though Chaco. And I don't think Gunthro, who scribbled his advice on the wall while in a standoff with Goblins, meant it to be taken in more than the cryptically general manner in which it was presented. That is, they are more hints than solutions.

I'd assume that if Gunthro was good enough to backswipe properly, he wouldn't be in a standoff with two goblins.

No, no, no. As previously said, the game is merely a representation of the Eighth. Really, the Goblins were so transfixed by the writing that as long as Guntro kept at it, they'd never attack him. Eventually he starved.
