In November 2005, I ran a small architecture contest. Instructions: Construct a room with the theme "The Wrong Way" These are the entries to that contest.

All glory to the participating architects!

can you give a code snippet of how you made the mimic turn
and walk according to the player? i was looking for that.

its a bit frustrating to make the player place multiple mimics during play, better to have them ready made

It is somewhat complicated scripting. There's a brief description and copy of one of the middle rooms in this thread.

If you just want normal mimics, then you can pre-place them by using mimic characters, and using the command "turn into monster".

Just mastered this hold and really really enjoyed it.

Each room is a totally different puzzle, and all are fun to play. Probably my favorites were Larry's Wrong Way(fairly easy), Doom's Backwards (quite difficult) and Stefan's Monster Traffic (difficult until you figure it out). But all rooms were really good.

I haven't solved the post-master room yet. It's...um, difficult.

I give this hold a 9 for fun and 7 brains.

[EDIT: And post-mastered. Cool room.]

Josh

It's a reverse mimic that goes The Wrong Way - it will perform the opposite of all of your moves.

That said, you need to hit the orb that would normally correspond to the door opposite you - the wrong orb - the orb furthest away from you (West in this case).

Err... I'm using 3.0.2. I make the mimic strike that orb, but it starts to spin :S and I can't do nothing.

Definitely a bug, It happens to me too, and I think I can remember that it didn't happen in 3.0.0. .

Having played around on this hold yesterday, I can confirm that definitely does not happen on 3.0.0 - that is, in 3.0.0 the mimics behave as Chaco describes.

Apparently it's not a good idea to play this hold with the 2.0.16 patch either. The patch seems to change how NPCs with swords appear in the room, so that the "Flipped" puzzle no longer works as intended. Unintended behavior described here

Edit: Actually, things worked out okay. It's possible to skip that one puzzle, and still conquer all the other rooms in this unique hold, including the post-mastery room. This is exactly what I wanted to do :D

Thanks to Rabscuttle for fixing this hold, and thanks to Schik for updating it. All the rooms work now. :)

This is now a 3.2 hold, and cannot be played in JtRH like it says at the top of the thread. EDIT: Nevermind, thanks to Schik for fixing that too.

In conclusion if you haven't played this hold already, you absolutely should.

Technically two entries use the same gimmick (locked sword rotation) but the rooms are still unique. The reverse-mimics in the hub level are annoying to pass through each time, but that's like a minute or two total compared to the several hours it took me to solve the main levels.

You can tell this was a single-room contest because every level here is incredibly polished, fun to play, and satisfyingly difficult on its own. The theme is loose enough that each entry plays differently and there's a good mix of lynchpins, slashing and manipulations (sometimes even in the same room!). The hub level also provides a few breather puzzles that, in-theme, are only solvable on your way back.
