What do you mean by "I did that"? Do you mean you tried to position yourself and the Slayer in the correct places, and nothing happened, or you tried to do so, and it didn't work, or you tried to get the Slayer to stab parts of the tar and you are left with uncuttable blobs?

Maybe you should be more specific.

Anyway. To clear this room you need to know about the rule involving swords and tar. Basically, if two or more sharp implements cover tar edges (and probably mud corners too) in one move, all will cut the tar or mud at the same time, regardless of monster/placement order. This means that every square of tar or mud beneath a sword or hook will be destroyed.

Now...

I keep returning to this room but I'm still stuck after weeks of trying. I can clear everything except the two crossbars of the I shaped tar. I have no problem with the upright, working from either side, but after that, the slayer always cuts into one of the two crossbars before I have time to position Beethro.

I've read both threads for this room, and expected it would be no problem once I figured how to cut the upright. How wrong I was.. So, there y'go you expert smitemasters, how do I do it?

Beethro's Law applied here - "Ask for a solution, and it will immediately come to you."

Thanks anyway Wes. BTW, I thought of you today whilst out with the camera. Here.

I've managed to clear it to the final I shape but unlike the previuos posts i can't clear the middle bar so i'm left as per the attached demo. Any hints with how to clear the middle??

I'm not at my DROD computer, so I'm guessing exactly what your demo shows . . . but I think I remember that all three components of the "I" can be attacked sequentially with the mimic right beside Beethro.

This does remind me of a story I read many years ago (by Robert Pohl, I think) - "With a Finger in My I".

Perhaps you could take a screenshot or take a demo of how far you have gotten?

Trust me, it isn't as hard as it looks.

I just have to say for the record that this room is brilliant. It's fiendishly difficult to figure out how to fully solve this room. It's not a stretch to say that I never would have figured it out without the hints in this forum -- I would have just passed the room or put down the game altogether. The solution is perfectly possible within the rules of the game, you just have to free your mind. So, hats off to the architect, and to the helpful folks here who hinted gently enough that I could at least figure out a bunch of the room's secrets on my own.

<nostalgia>
Ah, yes! It reminds me of some of my more fiendish Lode Runner levels, like the one where you need to dig a hole while standing on the head of a falling guard. Memories!

ok, not bad, but you've missed some things

Firstly, you can treat the slayer like a mimic. By this I mean that you make it so that you and the slayer will stab the tar simultaneously, enabling you to take out 2x4 squares of tar.

Secondly, within the first 10 moves of the room, you made it so that it was impossible to complete.

I have attached a demo which shows how to remove the 2x4 blocks, and most of the left part of the room.

Here's a demo showing one way of doing the key part of taking out that crossbeam. I think it's easiest if both weapons are diagonal. And it can't hurt to make sure the Slayer is pointing the way you want before you start laying the trail.

I figured out how to clear the "I" and the other patch of tar at the west end of the room that reduces to a 2 X 4 blob. My problem is the tar patch just west of the checkpoint. It always gets reduced to a 2 X 2 blob and there seems to be no way to clear blobs of that size.
