Ok...Finally got this one! So, in the interest of helping those who got stuck the same way I did, I'll answer my own question from the previous post:
If you have roaches approaching from the east and south, and little room to maneuver to north and west...

×Don't wait for the roaches to get to you - take the fight to them.

×Point your sword east and charge that line of roaches!

×Note that this requires you to have the roaches on the east in single-file.

×There may be too many to kill before the ones from the south catch up...but you've bought some room to maneuver.

×When the roaches to the south are two squares away, point the sword SE and start backing up (to the west).

×Then when the roaches to the south are gone, you can charge east again to get the rest of the roaches there.
This approach helps two ways - not only does it waste fewer moves, the sequence also ends up significantly further east (towards the next orb) than just waiting for the bugs to come to you.
Hope that helps someone out there. I managed to just squeak out the room - caught the last orb with no moves to spare.
