This game will be similar to Guess the Screenshot!, except the posts need to be audio files (any common format that isn't enormous will do). The first correct respondent will be awarded at least +2 mod points on the responding post.

You can post 8-bit music, speech, a sound effect, or anything distinct enough to give the game away. The game must be electronic (e.g. NES, C64, Dos, arcade, handheld, et cetera).

Sound effects or speech from games may be stripped from background sound or music, if you prefer. Otherwise, all audio should come directly from the game (so no remixes or altered audio please).

EDIT: Original fan-music, inspired by a game, that is sufficiently near to the game in its musical score or theme, is also acceptable (despite not being a direct rip). Just make sure you mention that it's fan-produced, and the game to guess is the one that inspired it. There's a lot of fan-made music out there which is too good to resist a plug.

(Personally, I'd still prefer this be limited to original works, rather than junky stuff like "Super Mario Bros. remixed with dubstep" or "Ys Book I and II theme played in reverse with lots of tremolo" or "Monkey Island theme reduced to 8-bit sound and mashup'd with Bjork's 'Human Behavior'". But hey, do whatever you think is cool.)

If you are first to guess correctly, in addition to the mod points, you get to post the next clip. If more than a day passes between clips, or more than half a day passes after a respondent fails to post a new clip, anyone may post a short message declaring dibs on posting the next clip. In this case, whoever posted dibs first gets to post the next clip (just make sure you refresh the thread to see that you called dibs first, in case of race conditions).

I'll start us off with a classic. As I mentioned in Guess the Screenshot!, this is a game I have returned to twice, but am still unable to beat due to a part very near the end of the game I cannot solve. Enjoy...

This is an awesome game idea! Rank points for everyone!

But...WAV files are the huge. Why not prefer mp3s or oggs or something a tenth the size of WAVs?

True, and I would agree in most cases. But it's John Cleese. The man is just too amazing to have his gravitas compressed, lossless or otherwise

I am dumb when it comes to audio. The only reason I suggested wav format is that I expected the files to be small, and most browsers to be able to play wav directly (rather than download to disk first).

I'll remove that rule--just upload whatever makes the most sense.

I also just relaxed the rule on "must be a rip" slightly. There's a lot of original fan-music for certain popular indie games that would be perfect for this, even though it's not from the audio directly. I'll give an example here, should I get one of these correct in the future.

I'd forgotten that John Cleese had done that. But it took me only a few seconds to guess it. (Terry Jones's parrot was far more memorable, but not in a good way.) I still have that game on CD-ROM.

Hmm. At first I thought this was just a reference to the movie Sneakers, but I think it's from an updated version of the classic movie-style hacking game "Uplink"...?

Not one I've played personally, but I've seen bits of it before and I think it's available on Steam.

This is the intro portion of a fan-made song for an extremely popular indie game. It fades out just as the lyrics of one of the singers begin (it's a duet).

This sound is forever seared in my brain. I know the game that I sampled it from used it extensively, but it can be found in many places.

I checked Silent Hill and Resident Evil, neither use this sound. Their version of this sound is much more metallic.

It's found in a ton of movies, too.

Should I post another sound?

If you don't think anyone's going to get it, you can reveal and post another sound (or not reveal, and post a second sound from the same game to see if that helps).

I'm surprised nobody's done any NES (or comparable 8-bit or 16-bit) music yet, really. That tends to be one of the more popular guess-the-game themes.
