I don't remember how I solved this one. However, there are a couple of important things to note.

1) You have 450 moves before the tar grows into the two-wide corridor at the bottom. That ought to be enough to take out the tar mothers.
2) Even if it takes you longer, the trapdoor alcoves along the two-wide corridor mean that you can still cut that tar as long as you're judicious about where to cut.
What problems are you having with the room, exactly? Where do you get stuck?
