The Twelfth Annual People's Choice Awards
Welcome to the
Twelfth Annual People's Choice Awards (also known as
The Deadlies)!
2015 has seen the publication of a great deal of excellent holds. There have been discussions in chat over how difficult it will be to decide on who to vote for in a number of categories, which is an excellent problem for an awards ceremony to have! But who will ultimately prevail and walk away with the awards? That's for you all to decide!
What follows owes a great deal to gamer_extreme_101, RoboBob3000, CuriousShyRabbit, Trickster and RabidChild, all of whom put on this awards show in past years and helped to define the rules and categories. An additional thanks to Chaco, Lucky Luc and Insoluble for their help in organising the nominees for various categories this year!
This year sees the introduction of a new award category as requested by the community, Best DROD Let's Player. Also the usual formal nominations process has gone, in favour of a more informal discussion thread which was posted earlier, so that things can move ahead in a much more timely fashion. Hopefully we will never again have the Deadlies hosted in the middle of the year!
So how does voting work? Here's the lowdown:
*You can vote for ONE AND ONLY ONE option in EACH category.
*There is the option in each category to not vote if you do not wish to cast a vote for anybody in particular.
*All of your votes must be submitted at the same time. You only get one opportunity to vote, so choose carefully!
*If you choose to view the results before voting, YOU WILL FORFEIT YOUR ABILITY TO CAST A VOTE! So don't do that if you wish to cast any votes.
*You are allowed to vote for yourself and your own holds if you wish.
*Voting will end on the 1st March, so you still have a month to play any holds that you've yet to try.
Here is a list in alphabetical order of all of the holds released this year:

The 15 award categories are:
1. Best Custom Game Element
Once upon a time this award was awarded to the hold with the best custom element. These days, there are so many more custom elements released, with many holds containing multiple elements, that we now vote on individual elements instead. Which was your favourite?
Note: To prevent spoilers, the elements in Homeward Adventure have been given non-spoilery names.
2. Design Excellence in a Modification or Addition
This award is for the best addition to DROD that is not a hold. This is mostly in the form of a graphical mod or new room style, but can also include utilities.
Due to there only being one eligible nomination this year, there will be no vote in this category.
3. Technical Design Excellence in Scripting
This award is for the hold with the best overall scripting. What this means is up to the voter, it can be for cutscenes, custom elements, challenges, and so on. With scripting, the possibilities are endless!
4. Technical Design Excellence in Layout and Aesthetics
Making a good hold isn't just about good puzzles, aesthetics are also very important! Which hold had the best aesthetics? This can be in terms of level layouts, lighting, a unique visual style, or anything at all that was pleasing to your eye.
Note: You may find the
map.php tool useful.
5. Technical Design Excellence in Concept
This award is to recognise those who come up with something unique in their holds. Ranging from general puzzle concepts to entire custom elements, if any hold this year made you think "
Wow, what a cool idea!"
then it will be the perfect candidate for this award.
6. Creative Design Excellence in Storyline
This award is for the hold with the best storyline.
7. Creative Design Excellence in Difficulty
This award is for the best difficult hold. Whether this means it was the best hold to handle a high difficulty, or the most fun while being hard, or any other interpretation, is up to you. Only holds or level sets with an average vote of 7 or more "
brains"
(at the time of this posting) are eligible for this award.
8. Creative Design Excellence in Entertainment
This award is for the best hold that isn't very difficult. Being easy doesn't mean boring, which hold do you think worked best without resorting to extreme difficulty? Only holds or level sets with an average vote of less than 7 "
brains"
(at the time of this posting) are eligible for this award.
9. DROD Hold of the Year
This award is for the best DROD hold published in 2015.
10. DROD RPG Level Set of the Year
This award is for the best DROD RPG level set published in 2015.
Due to there only being one eligible nomination this year, there will be no vote in this category.
11. Best Voice Artist in a Distinct Role
This award is for the best voice acting in a hold published in 2015.
There are no eligible holds this year, so this award will not be taking place.
12. Novice Architect Award
Which new architect was the best? To be eligible for this award, an architect must have released his or her first SOLO hold this year, any previous contribution to a collaborative hold does not count.
13. Erik Hermansen Award for Lifetime Architectural Achievement
This award is for architects who have been creating great holds for years. To create one good hold requires creativity and skill. But to keep on creating good holds, year after year, requires special dedication and inspiration, well worthy of an award. This award is so prestigious, it can only be won once in a lifetime. Previous winners of the Erik Hermansen Award are:
*Doom (2006)
*LarryMurk (2007)
*Jacob (2008)
*BoyBlue (2009)
*Rheb (2010)
*Chaco (2011)
*Dischorran (2012)
*mxvladi (2013)
*blorx1 (2014)
Architects who have not previously won this award, published their first stand-alone (non-compilation) hold or level set in 2013 or earlier, have published at least one stand-alone hold or level set in 2015, and have created at least four stand-alone holds or level sets with an average vote of 7.0 or higher "
fun"
(at the time of this posting) are eligible for this award.

14. Best Community Contributor
The DROD community receives a number of excellent contributions from the community that are not necessarily directly related to architecture. This award is here to celebrate and honour those who make the DROD community a better place in their own ways. This award is entirely nomination driven and members are eligible for any reason provided somebody else nominates them.
Here are this year's candidates, along with an abridged list of the reasons why they were nominated:
* Crimson Moon - Let's Plays
* DezzTech - Taking on the task of improving some graphics for RPG
* disoriented & Dragon Fogel - Contributing to the H&S board, creating excitement in chat for their combined quest to conquer all holds between them
* hyperme - Contributions to community projects, and reviving interest in RPG by reviving RPG Anonymous 3.0
* kieranmillar - Verifying bug fixes, hosting the Deadlies for the second year in a row
* Nuntar - Updating official holds to verisons 5.0, work on organising and overseeing the Entry Point community project, helpful and friendly in chat
* skell - Work on 5.1 engine, scripting tutorial videos, DROD ideas generator
15. Best DROD Let's Player
The Let's Play community for DROD has really kicked off this year, so this new award recognises your favourite Let's Player, who has dedicated lots of time and energy in helping you enjoy DROD in new ways!
