Matt, I sent you a few e-mails but no response yet. Basically we should talk very soon about meeting up. Can you e-mail me your phone#? My internet access is pretty infrequent, so it's probably best to talk on the phone. erikh@caravelgames.com

Already sent off the message, expecting phone call any minute now.

We're testing the old Buffy theory that people will filter out what they can't understand.

So far, results are mixed.

Actually, Erik and Brittany are going to have dinner with us tomorrow night. We're just getting the organising down.

Do you really think we're going to believe that? ;)

I never let facts get in the way of my conspiracy theories, you know... :D

Possible! Multiplayer is entirely possible--I'm thinking it'd be LAN-based.

I'd have thought that the type of traffic a multiplayer drod would require would be quite minimal.. Along with the 'everything waits until you move' element of drod, I'd have thought it would be a perfect game for 300 baud modems, connecting from other sides of the world

Something multiplayer-based will happen in TCB. Erik said so himself at least twice. So, it has to be something more sinister.

My name is Matt, by the way. No, really.

No, Erik never said that. He said that Caravel's future plans for after TCB include something multiplayer.

Depends on how it's turnbased. Everybody might only get 10-20 seconds to move, and that'd be painful on a slow connection.

I'd like to proudly say that I was ignoring the thread.

That is, until I saw 12 more replies than should have been needed. Young'uns nowadays, I tell you*.

*Actually, I'm probably younger than the majority of you. Phooey.

Well, I dutifully didn't reply to this topic until:

1) It had already been established that Erik had contacted Matt, so would no longer need to be trying to monitor this thread

2) The topic had totally diversified to something else.

SO THERE! :p

Oh, and Banjooie, I don't agree.. 10-20 seconds to move would be fine on a slow connection.. Whether it would 'work' as far as gameplay is another debate, but you could easily shove that amount of data out on a connection in less than a second, which would surely be fine!

Remember, the quakes and Unreal Tournaments manage to get alot more data out in a lot less time !

Got it! We're in the Eighth, so take every eighth letter of the original post, ignoring spaces and punctuation, and you get: NWUOAWTSTUEOMEIINREKOCA. That doesn't mean much, but remember we're dealing with a two-person communication, so split this into the odd and even letters: NUATTEMINEOA and WOWSUOEIRKC. Now the meaning is clear:

First, NUATTE MINE OA. www.nuatte.com is a chocolatier, so the plot of TCB will involve Beethro expanding his restaurant menu into desserts, and thus going into a "nuatte mine"--i.e., a chocolate mine. (Clearly in the Eighth, chocolate is mined from the earth.) "OA", in this case, is the abbreviation for "on account", and this is why Erik was posting; of course Matt knew that the chocolate mine was part of the plot, but Erik wanted him to know that he'd solved the problem of whether Beethro was carrying greckles with him, and if so why no one had mugged him, by saying that he'd be buying things on account.

Second, WOWS UO EIRK C. WOWS is easy enough; UO is "Ultima Online". Erik is letting Matt know that he sent a copy of DROD 3.0 over to the Ultima Online people, and they were impressed. But why "EIRK C"? EIRK is a misspelling of ERIK, and 'C' is another way to misspell "Erik"--i.e., "Eric"--so Erik was letting Matt know who he'd sent it to: the guy at UO who always misspells his name with a C.

Chocolate mines, and game play that impresses the Ultima Online people. I have to say I'm looking forward to this more than ever!

But... since Beethro sheaths his sword at the End Hold description for JtRH (?!?), it looks as if TCB will have very little hack-n-slash :weep

Now you're just doing it deliberately.

I might leave this thread for another couple of days, and see where it goes, before I give you all the report on my day with Erik. However, I think it's probably for the best if we send it to Anything for the time being.

Move zig!
