I dunno If this is the right place to put this, but I think it be really cool to have a contest for only delvers and below.
I dunno, sorta like an underdawg contest.

Just an idea.
Its mainly because I curl up into a ball thinking about going up against larrymurk or chaco

If this is implemented in any form, I'd prefer it be split up into rankings, so the higher-stat-wise folks can participate as well.

Wow, me being grouped with larrymurk?!?

I guess when you get to my point you can really, really appreciate the differences between someone like him and someone like me. That is, he comes up with rooms that are barely solvable, and I just come up with rooms that are solvable. And boyblue comes up with rooms that you hope are solvable.

...uh, I'm...rank points are separate from DROD skill, cause, uh.

..actually, I wonder how good at it Erik IS.

I think the fact that I have 3 times as many rank points as Michthro sort of proves that DROD skill is not correlated to rank points...

Well, he made (and solved) all 25 levels of King Dugan's Dungeon, so he's got to be pretty good at it, though probably not quite as good as our good friend Michthro here.

Well it would also be a good way for people who dont have many rank points to win some.

True, but I think that's a fundamentally flawed idea. There are two types of people with low rank point counts - people who are new to the community, and people who have been here a while but have produced a lot of annoying posts/few useful posts. I don't think these two classes of people should be lumped together.

I think it's a good idea to have the occasional "newbie-oriented" contest, that rewards new players. The "rookie award" in the contests does this to some degree, but there could be contests with a whole "new player division" or something, or even new players-only contests.

But I don't think it's fair to anyone to reward the people who have low rank point counts because they are not productive members of the forum. If someone is not a new player, and has a low score, they should get it up the same way as everyone else, rather than get special opportunities.

Regardless of how many rank points I have, the total number of holds that I've posted to Architecture and Holds combined is zero. In fact, the total number of holds I've released at all is three--a Limited Resources Hold, a Story of My Life, and an Al Dente hold. I'd hardly call myself a particularly experienced architect.

On the other hand, Dali--who at the time of this writing has just slightly over a third of the rank points I do, for whatever reason (very possibly contest-winning-related; see below)--has two of the highest-ranked holds on the board, one of them at 9.0 and the other at 8.0.

And, OK, he's a Master Delver as opposed to a Delver, but regardless, I think it's a decent indication that, whatever else is true, there's no particular correlation between one's rank points and one's ability to construct a good hold. (Incidentally, I happen to have won two contests--one of them was my first contest, Hermetic Puzzles, which happened to require no particular DROD talent, whereas I've been constructing puzzles for nearly a decade; the other was the Story of You, which was not particularly holdbuildingish. In neither case would newbie-to-the-board status have especially changed much; in fact, I was almost certainly a Delver in that first contest.)

Now, that said, I'd encourage you to run an unofficial contest for delvers only; it'd certainly be interesting.

 Get more rank points

You can do this by any means you like - making good posts, doing well in competitions, helping people out in H&S, creating holds and getting karma points, participating in forum games (even that mindbogglingly pointless guess the next poster one) The choice is yours.

Ready.... go!

It's good if you know you'll need a bunch of mod points for a contest or something, and you don't know how to get them. Play the game cautiously and you'll get a bunch.

It is not a game, it is a hideous waste of bandwidth.

No, if you need a bunch of mod points for a contest, you can ask a moderator to help you, or you can make a bunch of /really cool posts/.

Things like the ^<V game, as dumb as THAT is, are actually games. They require a modicum of effort, and are actually occasionally interesting.

Guess the next poster is never an interesting game. It is occasionally worth a read when people make an EFFORT in their posts, or at least a sentence, but a thread where people simply post down names is not a freaking game.

Frankly, if it were to be mysteriously deleted in a freak train/bike accident, I wouldn't consider it a loss, and I'm terrified to know who /would/.

But I threadjack the bejesus out of the thread.

I can concievably see forum mini-contests for newbies designed to get them into the swing of things. Since we, y'know, we have a /join date/ and all, this could be used instead of rank points.

That thread is the main reason I stopped getting the Forum Games board e-mailed to me, and for a while was the only board I didn't get in my mailbox (until we added all the beta boards and other things).

Game on,

Hmm, well in that case, REJOICE! your complaints seem to have killed the "predict the new poster" thread.

My long-time dream is winning a million mod points, and then modding every wrong guess on the "predict the next poster" thread down...

Agreed; that does seem kind of, well, selfish. The thread can be quite annoying, I agree, but your suggestion is very self-centered, especially as it is clear what the thread is supposed to be for.

It's just a dream, you know I would never do it...

But if there was some way for a user to hide a thread so that the board icon doesn't track changes in that specific thread for him, it would be awesome.

That's alright then:

Schik, could you shake the bar a bit for Maurog? I think he's in need of about a million mod points!

I have easily a million mod points and find stupid things like that endlessly amusing.

I'm just saying.

Although I don't have so much of a problem with the thread because I'm surprised it's gone on so long, so I'm not going to go modding everyone down for an incorrect guess.
