Ah, that would be the case if they started outside the play area. But since they started with their head already in, they exhaust the area one turn too early, hence 265.

Somehow, I imagined that the snakepit would be more cramped than this. A lot of the arenas seem wide open, like the 15+ long stretches that some people are striking across. No possible change of course for more than a day! We'll see how quickly things start to change once snakes get in a little closer proximity to one another.

I'd like to point out too that there will be many open pockets of unreachable space that are formed. Especially since many snakes seem to be rushing to the middle space, leaving behind subarenas that may be unreachable later. Unreachable space shortens the game time. I have no idea how long the game will take to finish, but if I had to make a prediction, I'd say 4 weeks.

Today's useless observation: After his first jump, Chaco chose to jump twice. Had he instead chosen to bump twice, Beef Row would've died next turn. Here's a picture of the current situation:

Click here to view the secret text

Beef Row is marked, Chaco is the one that's jumped over three obstacles, and Jason is just below Beef Row. If Chaco had bumped, he'd now be in the corner of the path just inside the outermost ring of obstacles. On the next turn, this would've happened: Chaco moves one square up. Beef Row is unable to jump, being blocked upwards and rightwards by walls, leftwards by Chaco, and downwards by Jason, and he therefore dies. Jason then jumps leftwards.

Note that as soon as both Jason and Beef Row bumped and started moving around the outer path, neither of them could've done anything to prevent Chaco from killing Beef Row. I'm fairly sure this is the fastest death possible in this arena.

Very interesting. I was starting to feel guilty about setting Beef Row up badly, but then I realized he could have jumped earlier and avoided the danger. Looks like he lucked out this time.

Well, I thought I'd looked at everything in this choice, and missed Chaco's ability to move in that quickly, so if he had, it would've been me setting myself up, not you. So its ok, though I'm certainly glad he didn't. I really had thought I'd counted everything up so I was sure Chaco couldn't do that. Next time I think I'll actually DRAW the routes like I did in the first pit.

On turn 23, Tuttle passed up his easy path to the middle area, choosing instead to jump and stay on the perimeter. Interesting.

In doing so, he made it possible for me to reach the middle area about 24 hours earlier than I would have other.

If I decide to do so.

Hm. Looks like I could have had a pretty fast entry into the inner area, regardless of Mikko's moves (actually, thanks to him, I might have been one of the fastest). Anyway, that doesn't matter, since I was away and couldn't enter any moves. It could be a while until I can enter the inner area now.

There's still the question of whether entering the inner area too early is actually an advantage, of course ..

On turn 23, Tuttle passed up his easy path to the middle area, choosing instead to jump and stay on the perimeter. Interesting.
Er, wouldn't the alternative require a jump to the left ? With a forward jump available ? Or am I missing something again ?

Don't worry, I thought exactly the same at first (hence the very first bump). Unfortunately, it turned out to rely on Syril Ram also bumping instead of jumping.

I think that, as of last move (1.5 hours ago), we have our first certain casuality - unless I miscalcuated, the fact that Maruog failed to jump in his last move means he can't leave the corner chamber.

I disagree. I think if he bumps and jumps right, he still gets out with a U-turn jump at the end (but I'm not gonna say what my answer is, in hopes that he errs :) )

You doubt my awesome snaking powers? I deliberately chose to stay in the starting chamber as long as possible.

The rumours about my death have been greatly exaggerated.

In fact, zombie status notwithstanding, Maurog is guaranteed entry into the middle arena. (And he has me to thank for it, or rather, the fact that I had no choice but to start the way I did.)

He has two other snakes to thank as well... including me. Interesting how all the corner snakes can take this route if the other players set it up correctly.

I'm just not sure if it really does them any good, though, considering where that route takes them.

Oops. I didn't even realise I could have done that. :/

Oh well, I'm still on track to my destination. I don't think a lot of opportunities like this arise where we can purposefully kill a snake, so I think it's just going to be luck - who ends up in those dead ends sprinkled around the arena.

Not early on, but as fewer and fewer spaces become available, it will become more likely that one serpent's moves will block off another serpent's survival. Of course, moves made now may have long-lasting consequences, but probably most of us cannot predict them. I certainly cannot.

I cannot even get the movement order correct when making my plans which is why I'm now headed somewhere different than where I intended. Not worse, just different.

This is the first time I've checked the pit since last night. But something disturbs me. The last time I had a chance to jump, I specifcly told the snake to jump, but it bumped instead. No snake was blocking me. What happened?

Were you definitely-definitely logged in? And as Ezlo? If you weren't logged in as "Ezlo" and you went to the screen, you could type in a number of commands and they would be saved under the guest account or whoever you were logged in as. Note that selection of a snake from the dropdown lists is irrelevant.

I don't know any way to troubleshoot this unfortunately. I would hope there isn't a bug, but I imagine it is possible. If I had more time earlier, I might have added some logging that would help.

I've had a couple times where I entered moves and clicked on things (like changing which player I'm highlighting) and thought my moves were recorded, but I had never clicked "save" (since I enter my moves in lowercase and "save" capitalizes them, I have an easy way of telling)

Question for Erik: (since this is the snake related thread most certain to be read)

I designed a variant on the jumping snakes puzzle. Is it alright if I post it? And where would be best to post? The movement rules are the same, but how walls and edges work is very diffrent, so I'm not sure if it would be too confusing to post in the main Jumping Snakes discussion thread. Should I stick with the main thread, or start a new thread for snake variants in Forum Games?

Definitely goes in a new topic. If it's an actual game you are definitely going to run then you could put it in Contests. If it's just a puzzle or discussion about starting a game, then Forum Games is better. If in doubt, just go with Forum Games.
