Maybe they were looking because they knew that there was a likelyhood of users of this forum living in or nearby the city in real life?

Either way, I agree it's a really dodgy plan that doesn't make a lot of sense, owing to how narrow/specific the criteria is.

The point of that type of post is not to advertise to users of this forum, but to manipulate algorithms like PageRank into boosting the linked website's position in search results. This is why you'd sometimes see an attempt to disguise a hyperlink payload in a message crafted to look like an innocuous post to a human viewer.

This behavior shows up everywhere on the internet where any kind of freeform text including live links can be inserted. I once had a website with a fully custom written-from-scratch message board on it, and someone bothered to write or adapt a spam script to automatically register users and post spam on it. Presumably there's a whole economy built around this, since it's so persistent.

Okay, this is a weird one. I think someone is going around disliking every single post I make just out of immature spite for my slip up with that contract. (You know the one.) My only evidence is that an unrelated post I just made a few minutes ago already has a downvote. I can't really judge my own art, so it's not solid proof, but I find it suspicious enough to warrant further investigation.

This seems off-topic, but I agree with you that users who go around downmodding others' posts -- generally because they didn't like something that the user did somewhere outside of that post -- is not in keeping with the spirit of the post moderation system. I've seen that happening with other users' posts too from time to time.

I'd like to request that users (especially those with a bunch of mod points) please mod posts directly for the content contained in those posts and not as a way to react to other users in general.

UPDATE: And they have a very AI-esque name, and fare from Algeria. I know these aren't necessarily spambot giveaways by a strict logical interpretation of what spam actually is, but in this case I am just making an assumption/educated guess based off patterns from previous spam reports.
