This is one of those moments when Time seems to swirl and collapse and stretch, seeming at once fleeting and infinite. It's a year since I started this thread and yet it seems that it was just a moment ago that I discovered DROD and joined this site; at the same time I feel as though I have always been here - and that is a compliment to both the people who run the site and to all of you, the members.

Well, with the turning of the Earth around the sun I have come back to this thread. For some of you it will already be 2008, for others it will be a while yet; here we are rapidly approaching the midnight hour and bells and fireworks. To all of you I wish you, once again, many best wishes for the New Year. May 2008 hold good health and happiness and all the good things you might wish for.

So may I again this Hogmanay raise a dram to everyone here and say

a guid New Year tae ane an' 'a and lang mae yer lums reek!!

Also, until the 5th of January the NDR is streaming "Dinner for One", the one sketch that's been on TV in Germany and Austria right before the new year starts every year for the last 35 or so years.

Give it a look in case you don't know it yet - except for the introduction it's all in English, and even then understanding the dialogue isn't that neccessary...

I'd have lain asleep a long time a go were it not for these §&%&%§$% all over town and also right next to our house who just WON'T STOP WITH THE BLOODY FIREWORKS!!![/rant]

Neither do I get it. I'm glad we don't have fireworks here, but it's sorta pointless for a few reasons. Well, it's almost New Year here. I can't wait 'till it's eleven! I will go like:

I've had one of the best New Year eves so far. I and my family, and another family we know went out to a windbreak just outside the town where I live, Arvika. We made a big fire, we ate soup and drunk Julmust, a special Swedish Christmas-/jul, as it's called in Swedish-drink. In the middle of the night, we went through the woods up on a mountain and watched the fireworks, all around us. It was really cool, all around us people were setting off fireworks, it felt like thunder and the dark clouds were lit up every time a firework went off.

Where has it gone . .?! another year? and so very quickly.

I remember my late Grandmother saying two things about Time when I was a wee lass: that one knew one was aging when policemen started getting younger, and that each year was shorter than the one before. I spent some very confused years in my childhood thinking (honestly!) that policemen were some sort of special breed whose aging process was entirely the opposite to everyone elses. Took me a while to sort out what she meant, but of course now I see it - police men are very young these days! Heaven only knows what Physicists would make of her other statement, but I can attest to it also being true - each year does pass more quickly than the one before it . . . and here we are again, marking the end of a year in the darkest coldest days and the beginning of a New Year with hope for sunshine and warmth and better things to come.

So to everyone here may I offer all best wishes for 2009 and say

a guid New Year tae ane an' 'a and lang mae yer lums reek!!

- and suddenly, it seems, we are in 2011. It was fascinating looking back over this thread. How it marks the passing of time and invokes memories of the years we have all seen in part together through the lens of DRoD. Indeed, "the years are sudden".

I hope for all of you that 2011 will be a year of contentment and fulfillment, good health and friendship and filled with happy days. So in time-honoured tradition, let me raise a dram to you all and say
