Okay now that styles are in CN, I have a suggestion.

I would like the new CN styles to have music. And we have music we can use already too! Specifically, we have all the AE music, plus Uncovered.ogg. We could also use music that is free-use (I have a bunch of puzzley-sounding ogg files from OHR), classical works past copyright, or anything that Mike and the team lets us un-proprietarize from previous DROD engines (if any).

So, does anyone mind if I set up a poll to see which music goes best with which musicless CN styles? If so, the first step here would be to list the styles that need music, and the music we have that could be paired with a style.

Styles: You can download all of them in game through CN, with the exception of the three that have links.

Basalt
BlueBricks
InFlamesRock
SanctumTwo
Sandstone
Voids
Volcano
Flaming Peligroso (if approved)
Garden (if approved)
Great Jungle (if approved)
Paper (if approved)

Musics: these are the musics we have access to that are "long" enough to be used with styles. There should ideally be two songs for each style by default.

12thWarrior.mid (DRODIS) - heroic, determined, slow
CloudValley.mid (DRODIS) - slow, solemn, grand
Communication.mid (DRODIS) - nervous, conflict, techno
delusions.ogg (AE) - a bit dissonant, very dull (cliffs)
drod-awe.ogg (AE) - bouncy, resolute, thematic
EnchantedOrchard.mid (DRODIS) - simple, heroic, catchy
fortune.ogg (AE) - curious, slightly dark (catacombs)
gladyoucame.ogg (AE) - upbeat, airy (ice)
IncomingSignals.mid (DRODIS) - bouncy, upbeat, discovery
lev1-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - bouncy, wild, video-game
lev2-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - low, echoing, methodical
lev3-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - alien, bouncy, rhythmic
lev4-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - alien, reminiscent, gentle
lev5-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - anthem, slow, video-game
lev6-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - chimes, slow, icy feel
lev7-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - clockwork, curious, resolute
lev8-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - conflict, evil, climax
lev9-awe.ogg (Webfoot) - bubbly, upbeat, thematic
LongJourneyHome.mid (DRODIS) - anthem, travel, conflict
LottyrLotH.mid (DRODIS) - complex, curious, plodding
MCloudship.mid (DRODIS) - airy, thematic, multi-theme
nightwalk.ogg (AE) - low/slow, then bouncy/fast (voids)
simple.ogg (AE) - dull, yet somewhat bouncy (slime)
thegivers.ogg (AE) - confrontational, hyper (palace)
thespaces.ogg (AE) - playful, mysterious (cavern)
thewaydown.ogg (AE) - spooky, industrial (lava)
Trailblazer.mid (DRODIS) - fast, travel, progress
Uncovered.ogg (JtRH/RPG) - changing, mysterious, slow
Understatement.mid (DRODIS) - smooth, mellow, jazzy
VictoriousDays.mid (DRODIS) - bright, anthem, finale
waiting.ogg (AE) - curious, slow, impish (sanctum)
weseeyounow.ogg (AE) - determined, upbeat (endgame)
whistler.ogg (AE) - very upbeat, rhythmic (title music)

We have enough music to proceed (we need two songs per style), pending:
1) Information about whether or not we can use Webfoot DROD and DRODIS music.
2) Information about whether on not the DRODIS midi files are of sufficient quality.

You can get AE musics here.
You can find Uncovered.ogg here.
You can find free classical music ogg files here.
You can find free video-game style music (check licensing first, not all is free) over here.
The Webfoot-version songs are here, but the licensing of these songs is not yet confirmed.
The DRODIS songs are found with the DRODIS files here, but the licensing of these songs is not yet confirmed, and it is not yet known if the midi format is high-quality enough.

Does anyone know the license for Bjorn Lynne's DRODIS music? That's available on the fan site AE styles page.

Also there's the Webfoot music, although the license is not entirely clear. Apparently you can use it freely for Drod, but it may only be distributed from the fan site.

If I was in a band could I post music that we produced as free use?

Well... yeah, provided your band members agreed. You collectively own the rights to it.

No, that is Greenhouse you're thinking about. Garden is a fairly recent style I made that should work fine (see my signature for link).

I have updated the initial post.

Hopefully, Schik or someone else can answer:

1) Can the Webfoot music be used?
2) Can the DRODIS music be used?
3) Are the DRODIS midi files okay or do we need better quality ogg?

The newer DROD engines can't play MIDI, I think. It's easy to render 'em to Ogg Vorbis, though.

Edit: Also, it's nothing to do with quality. MIDI files are very, very different: they essentially list what notes to play on what instruments, rather than actually encoding the sound.

Edit2: If we can use it, I'd like to propose lev1-awe for Voids. That style is begging for some crazy upbeat music. Probably Nightwalk as the other just for the historical joke (and it fits well enough)

Another question pair: Did Webfoot DROD use the AE styles? What was the mapping from styles to songs for it?

As the guy who actually contacted Bjorn Lynne in regards to putting his music into DRODIS, I can say that I only had permission to distribute it on the condition that he was credited properly, in both a credits file as well as mention on the main screen. Going onto his website, he has this:
The Website States:
I allow my MIDI music to be used for free for non-profit / non-commercial websites, projects, videos, under the following terms:

1) Project must be non-commercial. No income. Not even advertising income.

2) If used on a website, you must include music credits, and a live working web link to my royalty-free music licensing website, www.Shockwave-Sound.com.

3) If used on a YouTube video or other similar online video services, you must include music credits in the "description" text field that's displayed underneath the video, like this:

Music track: (Title)
Composer: Bjorn A. Lynne (PRS)
License his music from: www.Shockwave-Sound.com

(Replace "(Title)" with the actual title of the music track playing.)

As for Keiya's question about Webfoot music, yes. Mapping was that songs 1-9 corresponded to styles 1-9. Would have to load it up again to check out exact pathing, but that's the easiest way. I think both zip files on the site with the music have appropriate INI files to go along with it.

Can you contact him and request permission to use DRODIS with custom styles for TCB? TCB is a commercial product you must purchase to use the styles, but the custom styles are themselves free to download (even if you don't have TCB) and use.

Perhaps we could have a little pop-up appear after installing one of the styles that uses DRODIS music which says "music by this guy"...? Otherwise it may be hard to credit him directly.

You may beg if necessary, or ask me. I'm pretty good at begging.

Actually, DO you need to buy TCB? Styles might be usable with the demo.

(Also, if Bjorn Lynne is okay with us using his stuff, that opes up a lot more options.)

Bear in mind this was a loooooong time ago whenever DRODIS was first made (2004-ish?). The music is just MIDI files availible for free off of his website, and they would have to be converted into OGG/MP3 to work in the later engine, and then there's debate on whether it's a commercial product that we'd need to buy a licence from his for.

I'll stay out of it. Not saying you shouldn't, but there are lot of things to consider here.

Yep, you can use the editor and play player-made holds in all the demos, actually. You just only have one style (City in TCB, Foundation in JTRH and KDD2.0 standalone, Deep Spaces in RPG-TT).

(I think the game technically has entries for all the styles, they just all point at the same data? They're all listed in the editor, at least.)

No. All styles will appear as the one style you have (or a custom style that it was built in and you've installed)

Any of the *normal* styles (such as Iceworks, Foundation, Fortress, etc.) will appear as City style in TCB demo. Custom styles, however, will not be changed.

Okay... in the demo version of TCB:

* Aboveground, City, Deep Spaces, Fortress, Foundation, and Iceworks appear as City
* All AE styles appear as City
* Rooms built for custom styles which ARE NOT installed appear as City
* Rooms built for custom styles which ARE installed appear as that custom style

1. I don't know, but you could always download the files off the website and import them that way.

2. I would assume so, but I've never tried it, and I don't have a TCB demo install at the moment.

1. Yes... and No. You are connected to Cnet but you can't download holds and styles.

2. Yes. Editor can chose styles that they are not able to view. (ie I pick foundation but see it as city.) And I can install and use custom styles.

Whoa, pardon? If the demo version can't downloads holds or styles in-game with a CaravelNet subscription, then that's a bug. Are you sure about this?
